I don't need to be freed from my 'superstitions'.
If they're making me happy, wheres the harm?

Females have an organ made specifically for sexual pleasure. I think we all know which one I'm talking about, so I'll save my self the blushing and not type it out.
How exactly did natural selection cause us to get that?
Its not needed to reproduce. Why have it unless we were -meant- to feel good while... well, you know.. ?

And don't say, "so we'll be more inclined to reproduce", because back when we were.. idk.. formed, one way or another.. it was the men who chose when and where and how often. So logically, the process of 'evolution' would have left that little ditty out.

What a strange little debate. We start off by discussing masturbation and suddenly the Gods pop up. I suppose our Gods pervade our lives wherever we look, and may I add that I have no problem with that.

I don't have a problem with masturbation either, it's part of our lives and sometimes may even be a necessity. And, it doesn't make you blind.

You're right. When He said that, it was the beginning of time. So, obviously carrying on the human race was pretty high on the priorities list. Today- not so much. I mean, I'm pretty sure if I never have a baby, humans will not become extinct. So, I recant my original remark.

BUT I could point out that almost everything mentioned in the OT could be avoided through sex -inside- of marriage. So marriage is good for the world...?

who started the whole "whacking off makes you blind thing anyway?" i remember that before i understood what masturbation was, i had a male friend (who obviously did understand it) that must have been told this because he was seriously scared sh*tless that he was going to go blind or get hairy palms. none of us, even the ones that were more enlightened than me, could calm him down, and he ended up puking and hyperventilating.

good grief. poor guy, years later he explained to me he'd had a wet dream. i don't even think that qualifies as masturbation because you can't control those. he wouldn't tell me who told him he'd go blind, but his mom told him he'd get hair palms and she wasn't just teasing him.

i'm glad he's over all that now. what nonsense and a terrible way to fek with your kid's mind. female toddlers sometimes play with themselves, as my best friend explained to me because her daughter was doing this quite a bit and she was unnerved about me noticing it when i changed the baby's diapers why would babies do something if it were so evil?! sounds more like its natural?

my band director used to say something like 98% of guys jerk off and the other 2% lie about it because they haven't tried yet. (not sure how he didn't get fired for that because it was sexist and the school was so dang conservative.)

We had that other debate about living together before marriage. While I personally like the idea of marriage to go along with sex, I heard some arguments that I can't dispute. Nor can I force my belief system upon others.

I think when sex is involved in a healthy relationship, monogamy with a commitment benefits not just the relationship, but the world too.

A new pinnacle for WF debate.

I've tried this before -- are there any new debate topics? I think this was an attempt to be humorous and should have gone to the lounge -- if anywhere.

As far as sex is concerned -- I don't think there is any part of the human experience that has the potential to be so wonderful and destructive.

Celibacy is a good choice for some people. My views on sex might be considered old fashioned on this site. As far as casual sex in concerned, more often than not -- someone gets hurt.

There's no debate regarding "self-gratification." Not one I can think of. It's like anything else related to sex, depends on the context as to whether or not it's good or harmful. The latter -- rarely.

As far as kids are concerned, I wish people had to take a test before having children. Some people clearly shouldn't because they'll just botch it and some can't afford it at all, but do it anyway, regardless of how their financial situation will effect the children.

I think that sex within the context of a loving relationship is just about the best thing going.

Is there a debate in there anywhere? Maybe.

The OT? Make love, not war. Peace, brothers and sisters.

Some time in the "Old West" era (I don't have a date, sorry) a book was published that blamed every malady known to man on masturbation. Everything from cavities to back ache to harry palms to going blind. (I wish I knew the book, it was expressed in the TV show Wild West Tech)

Anyway, all it did was make make Masturbation off to be this evil bad thing and make room for prostitution to become a very large and booming business until it was later outlawed because people can't keep a straight thought when it comes to what is in their pants.

Maybe if people whacked off more and admitted to it more, we might have a better society.

Yah, but that is true. Going to fire a guy for telling the truth?

(I think it is more like 2% admit to it and the other 98% lie about it)

Let's broaden this out a bit.

Self gratification is good for the world. Cool.

Self gratification isn't all about masturbation, it's anything that makes you feel good. People give money to charities because it makes them feel better about themselves. All acts of kindness are self-gratifying and therefore ultimately selfish. Therefore without self gratification - without downright self-interest and selfishness - we'd just be pernicious wild animals who'd tear each other apart as soon as look at each other.

I think it was meant more as a euphemism. Although I agree with you.

Thank you, God.

Most of the reasons stated are common sense, out of a religious context.

It's just like anything else. There can be too much of a good thing.

Golf is a great game and I like to play when I can. But I have a friend who wants to play all the time, to the exclusion of almost everything else; to the point his wife feels neglected.

Same deal.

Nac,

There are many in professional sports that believe giving up sex while in training - at least before your big game day - is a good thing.

I know celibacy is a life long concept but I'm just relating the two notions since they have some commonality, including a percieved good at the end.

My first boing coach use to say all the time, "Boxing is for those that don't like sex."

One of the reasons boxers go away to boxing "camp" prior to a big contest is to put them away from the distractions of the world including the opposite sex.

The men in Gracie family (founders of Brazilian Jujitsu) don't have sex for weeks (or maybe it was months) prior to a big fight. That's what one of their wives said as well as one of the Gracie men (her husband).

That aside... there is something freeing in giving up sex. The most free I ever felt in my life were the months I gave up sex and masturbation. I see why Buddhist, Hindu, and Christian monks do it.

I think it is extremely difficult to be celibate living in the secular world with constant suggestive images and clothing though. Like I said... even boxers find it helpful to go away to "camp."

So, you may think that its better not to have children, but thats your opinion- mine is slightly different.
Population increase or decrease in relation to birth rates are a double edge sword.

I'm not one that believes the world is over populated but nonetheless, there is a truism in carrying capacity for the entire globe or, for specific nations and ecosystems. So, to that degree it is possible to overshoot the earth carrying capacity, or for a nation to do such, and negative consequences to follow.

On the other hand if a nations birth rate is to low then the economy can eventually coming crashing. In the United States for example... not only does the GDP depend upon a constant generational replenishing of numbers in the workforce, but are elderly collecting Social Security today depend on enough working age adults pumping tax dollars in to the SS system.
