Joseph, the title is asking whether suicide is selfish? You offered an example of "unbearable pain." That is the difference. I don't know the answer to the question and the title because I want to ask another question instead: under what circumstances?

When you are crippled with MIND BLOWING PHYSICAL PAIN that there is no cure for, or which will never leave you. Or when you have cancer, or any other number of diseases that are incurable and will take your life slowly and methodically.

Mermaid, the argument over "unbearable pain" was a pointless side issue, more to do with "how to argue" than with the OP. I expressed my views earlier in the thread.

Even the best planned suicide has a potential for failure, and the consequences can be worse than before the attempt.

If nobody loves you and you have a method of offing yourself without making others clean up the mess, it's not in the least bit selfish.
Someone might say "someone could have cured cancer, or helped people, so their suicide is selfish because it eliminates that possibility" kind of like the signs I've heard of that say "I would have cured cancer but you aborted me". I think that would be funny. I heard of a guy who goes around putting up signs like "I would have raped and murdered seventeen women, but you aborted me."

It is very selfish and inconsiderate of the others that do care about you.
There is no reason to kill yourself, if you try hard enough you can get through whatever.
Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Me-I'm not sure, what color does my hair look, I can't tell.
-I'm not sure, it looks brown to me.
Me-Then why would you ask me if I'm a blond or not?!?
-Well I thought you were, maybe you're just blond at heart.
Me-I thought my heart was red.
-Wow you really are blond at heart.

You offered specific parameters for the circumstances. The OP doesn't do that, so whether suicide is selfish is difficult to answer because circumstances differ.

Well, I still think you are misunderstanding me. Or maybe I didn't make myself clear. No matter. This one's kaput.

Why do I keep hearing myself?? This is what I said way back when, but I got barked at for it.

I still think no one owns your body but you, and it's your decision what to do with it. Hell, I can go buy cigarettes and drink myself to death. Same thing.

No. One's called suicide and the other's called stupidity. Oh, wait, those're actually interchangeable.

Yeah, but no one's stopping me from this legal act of stupidity. It's still self harm, hmm? And I think suicide is pretty sad - but we are over-populated. *wicked grin, waits for people to yell at him*
