As for the topic at hand, no, I don't think the games are too violent. As stated by those before me there is so much more to the games than the violence. It's escapism.
|
I agree with these statements. It's up to the consumer to purchase products that others may deem "too violent." It's no different then watching a rated R movie. I believe that most tv shows show more violence in their programs then in some movies or games. Children can just stay up late and watch all the stuff for free, rather than purchasing a fifty dollar game.
I do believe it is an issue, but people are blaming the wrong people. The parents have the most responsiblity. If you want to hide your children from the world forever, place them in a plastic bubble. Or you could be an average person and block unessacery material on your t.v. and tell them about the material on some games/movies. Communication is the best way to deal with this problem.

Just like to put this out there:
Art imitates life.
Thank you.

True, but I ask this to all...Whats the FUN in killing people...It pointless violence... I don't understand why people would want to kill... I understand that it's not real, but still...

Katastrof hit the nail on the head - art imitates life. What's the fun in watching Arnie, Stallone or Van Damme killing people on the big screen? They kill people, and we sit watching it with a bucket of popcorn, enjoying ourselves. It's the same difference. GTA is just an interactive movie. Check out another thread in the Debate section called, "Have you ever thought about killing someone?" You'll find that most people have. Murder is infused in our DNA. It is an inherent part of the human race. GTA is merely a release from real life. Those who play it and go out and kill someone, do so not because of the game, but because it was already in them.
Sam.

What kills me is so many kids play these games. And so many listen to gangsta rap posers.
But I keep being told my SF book has too much sex and violence to be a YA title.

That's awesome - did you know someone actually clocked an arcade version of Pacman a while back? Now that's dedication!

We actually did quite recently, in the Tips and Advice section. I guess the forums move on too quickly.
Ok, so I'm a gamer - and I don't like GTA. (I've copped the flak already, so you can leave that part out). The reasons that I don't like it have nothing to do with its level of violence, so that's pretty irrelevant anyway.
As with anything, graphic images will always have the potential to affect somebody, but those somebodies tend to be those with out the balance of reality in the first place. I'm not going to include children in this debate because this is very far from being a childrens' game. I will say, however, that parents need to take more responsibility for their children rather than blame the media that they allow them to be exposed to.

The sad reality, Lin, is that children will always be able to get their hands on games like this. Whether it be because of parents who blindly buy the game without understanding the content, or through their friend whose parents bought the game, or even by some punk-ass kid behind a counter who doesn't care what age they are just as long as he gets money off them.
I have three cousins well under eighteen who own all the GTA games. Sometimes I feel like giving the parents a real wake up call, but then I'd be the villain.
Sam.

A recent study showed that people actually calmed down after playing violent games. Which I can believe to be quite honest.

I could believe that too...under certain circumstances - but then I've witnessed the sheer rage that occurs when games become frustrating, or the save data for a level 80 elf with god-like armour is lost, or someone just simply loses (the more famous ones are on YouTube).

I can believe that too. Kind of like pornography ultimately diminishes sex drive.

the only thing that bothers me about GTA is that some of the later versions (and this occurs with any driving type game with decent graphics) cause at least two of my friends to drive rather recklessly right after playing and get a bit belligerent about it. i don't know if thats just specific to some people. i've read other people state the same problem in similar threads. i just don't ride with them in that case. i wouldn't ban a game or anything over it. theres already road rage and the DUIs out there.
i honestly think its kind of like how people play DDR and then think they can dance. they go into a club and try those moves and it hurts to watch. *shrug*

yeah, i don't get this mentality. i'm not sharing my wi-motes with certain friends. some of them just lose their cool and throw the fekking controllers every time. even when we're playing something silly like mariokart or puzzle fighter. they don't seem like type A people with anger management issues, but they'll throw the controllers. with the new controllers that are wireless this is getting really dangerous, i can't stay out of range of their wrath.
no video game, or game game makes me that pissed off.
good grief, i sorta understood getting punched in the nose for beating some girls at a sack race when i was 9 because there was adrenaline going.
i guess i'm a curser not a thrower when it comes to frustration?
