I've noticed a lot of that going around.
Whelp, I'm bi. That doesn't mean everyone is welcome to hit me up, but it does mean gender isn't an object.
Where I live, flying the confederate flag is considered celebrating your heritage. Discrimination kinda comes with the territory. The people I associate with (hopefully) are past that kinda thing, but it's likely to ruffle more than a few feathers if I find a boyfriend.
I wouldn't say I'm intimidated by straight people, but we do have a repression club here; anything from open to...flamboyant gets beaten up or threatened into submission.
A gay guy at the local high school tried running for prom queen. Had a whole movement behind him from people who legitimately supported him or thought it was a good joke. He was told he couldn't win, his votes were tossed out for good measure, and he ended up getting pressured out of the school. Kids bullied him, and the teachers "didn't want any trouble" so they removed the problem. =/
To have friends here you either have to go to church (or at least try to "save" people), be on drugs, or be racist. That's a huge generalization, I know, but sometimes it feels apt.
Wow, that might have gone on a bit long. To the OP, straight people don't intimidate me. Bigots who decide you are less human for being something they don't approve of, that's what worries me.
My opinion as a straight person; I don't care what others like. You like men and you're a man? Yippidy do. You like men and you're a woman? Yippidy do. People of other sexual orientations don't make me uncomfortable. Being hit on by a lesbian or bisexual girl can be just as flattering, or as annoying, as being hit on by a straight guy. If I think the girl is prettier than me, then I would probably be even more flattered! Lesbian, bisexual, straight, girls are catty (lol), so a compliment means a lot.
But I've noticed something among straight people who don't really like bi/homosexuals, or who are extremely uncomfortable around them. The straight people all seem to think or feel this way because they thing that the bi/homosexual person is checking them out. What is that about? Why do some straight people think that just because someone is bi/homosexual, they are also a sex fiend? Being a gay man doesn't mean you want to sleep with all men, and find all men attractive anymore than being a straight man means you want to sleep with all women, and find all women attractive. Chillax. The gay guy who is your waiter for the night probably isn't interested in you at all. You're not a fine catch, that's why you and I are 'just friends'.
LIES! BLASPHEMY! AND ALL THAT JAZZ!
As a straight person I also don't care what others are doing. Granted, if I'm at a restaurant and your making out the next table over I might be a little annoyed, but that goes for straight couples too.
I used to think people were kind of against homosexuality in my town, but then a gay friend of mine asked the office if he could bring a male date to prom. The principal told him no, then not only students, but parents and faculty got really upset about it because this kid is well liked. He's allowed to bring his date now, and I have a little more faith in humanity.
Wow. Coolness.
The only bad things (in the mark of the beast) are uncool things.
Can't wait till the cool political left (e.g., Nazis, Communists) start making movies depicting women that commit infanticide as cool people! All the really cool or want to be cool people will be jumping on that. RAD DUDE!

Can I be gay?
In the words of Mr. Rogers, you can be whatever you want to be.
