horror films - grim and gash or gory and great?
where does everybody stand on horror films then?
just thought i'd ask as i watched 'house of a thousand corpses' and 'the devil's regects' for the first time last night and they have reminded me that decent horror films are still being made rather than all the 'final destination' and 'white noise' pussio films that are made in hollywood.

I think that needless violence is kind of a pathetic way of getting jollies. If you liked getting startled go ahead but people that love to see fake blood being spattered every five seconds kinda weird me out. I mean, yeah, blood letting is a thing that gives weight to the moment and whatnot but... just because people like to see it? It's like the coloseum... except people don't really die. lol

Horror films are mildly entertaining for me. I have a brother who loves them. They are definitely getting better, as I've seen old Chucky movies and Friday the Thirteenth movies. As for Final Destination, the third one was good... for a horror movie.

Shaun of the Dead. It's funny, smart, sad and horrific towards the end--then it's funny. Great film.

The Saw movies are astounding, horror movies without the supernatural often are, and get confused with thrillers. Body Horror as a genre will soon be dead though.

Meh, I don't really enjoy gore fests (this is partially due to Dead Alive, which is the goriest movie ever created). I prefer a smart plot or at least something above the "oh my god a killers on the lose!".

Gory fests are as good as gone. Splatter films were good when they first created, up until the early 90's. Nowadays, horror films are just ways for amateur actors to worm their way into the big pictures, usually to no avail. The peroblem with most horror films is that the majority that people will use to refer to them (Friday the 13th, Halloween, and maybe Nightmare on Elm Street) are almost always the same, even more so now, with only the originals being worth watching.
I myself am a diehard horror fan, but I do perfer psychological horror much more than splatter, since they will need at least decnet actors and the always need build up/tension and occasional plot twist to be successful, compared to splatter which uses insanely huge body counts and downpours of blood to be considered a good movie.
I guess in general it jus depends on what you're looking for in a movie. You can't expect everyone to think something sucks, otherwise this debae wouldn't exist and the world would be a little more boring.

The first Saw movie was great. Not as bloody as the hype made out, which was good. Horror should keep you on the edge of your seat waiting for the unexpected to happen but also knowing the unexpected is going to occur. The Sixth Sense did this quite well and for first time viewing, Event Horizon is not bad.

There are no decent horror films left. Tell me one film I will feel sick watching because of gore, and one film that will geniunely scare me!

Genuinely scare you? This is different for many people, but some films that actually really SCARED me are these; some are obvious;
Halloween
Blair Witch Project- Don't care what anyone says, this film created fear and unsettiling feelings without showing a damn thing.
Suspiria- Thats really fucked up.
Exorcist 3 certainly has its moments - Great performance from Brad Douriff as the Devil.
And a horror/thriller but its foreign, called The Ordeal. Extremely disturbing

I think it all depends.
In some sense gore can add to the film, but in most cases directors overuse it and ruin the film in doing so.
To be honest though i have never really liked horror, both in books and movies, it just does'nt grip me.
But i do think that if horror is done well it is very good.
So anyway, like i said, gore. It can either add to the film or completely ruin it, the only problem most directors have is on where to draw the line.

That's exactly what I mean. Too many horror films nowadays try to rely on over the top, unrealistic gore to fuel themselves, and usually it backfires. But, everyone has their tastes in films.

I don't watch gorefests and don't watch anything shlock horror or anything like Feddy Kruger. That said, I think horror that delves into the horrors of our souls, our beliefs and our world can be hugely powerful and these are compelling for me - thinks like The Exorcist of course, or in literature Jeckyll and Hyde, Frankenstein (in particular). mr favourite types of horror films are ones about ghosts and stuff. i am not into the ones with violence so much as i don't find them scary really. but ghosts, oh boy they put the willies up me. i mean like What Lies Beneath and Thg Grudge, they scared the hell out of me. although, one film that was so scary that i couldn't watch to the end was Wolf Creek. it made me feel sick, and i don't like that, haha.

have you never seen any japanese horror films? watch house of 1000 corpes for a good american one. why would you not want to be scared. get that adrenaline going and spark a bit of fear. its great.
sometimes its relaxing to watch horror films because you see people getting slashed and murdered and it gives you that relief of someone doing to someone else what you want to do to people who have proper wronged you.
