Ghosts ... do they exist ?

I was at my brother in-laws house last night, he told us he was convinced his house was haunted by a ghost who he claims has made their presence known by unexplained cold gushes or breezes that felt like they went right through him. Also he told us a feeling of being touched by unseen hands !!!

I don't believe in anything like this at all, i'm a boring so and so, but i know plenty of people who swear there are such things and tell many a dark story about them. I think the only ghosts that exist are the ones inside your mind ? How about you ?

I am with you. Explaining abnormal events in terms of the supernatural makes things too complicated, nature is complicated enough as it is. It is also a very old trick, and they were lying all the other times they told us about Gods, heroes, magic, djinns, sprites, goblins witches, wizards and supernatural beings, it is amazing people think 'this time could be different' still.

I've no confidence, Bluesman, that any such a thing as a ghost can exist, but Olly, be careful to say nought against the Little People.

Wow so far so good , i was expecting a load of people telling stories of things that go bump in the night. I do think people scare themselves more than any ghosts, but they are a great subject matter and more so for story telling. Also i think people love to scare the living daylights out of eachother.

Where wouls the likes of Strphen King and Co be without Ghosts and gouls !

There must be someone who believes ? Come out come out where ever you are !

I've been harassed by demons. Just last night one squeezed my shoulder while I was in bed. I presume it was a demon anyway.

The human soul must go somewhere after we die. I think it's probable that some get sidetracked on their way to their Final Destination.

I also think that most people that claim to have seen ghosts are crackpots. That's probably the reason the spirits choose to haunt these people... They're screwy anyway, time for some fun!

Same reason UFO's only buzz farmer John and his wife / second cousin Edith.

Why must it? Because we're special?

We rot into the earth. If the 'human soul' was separate from our body, we wouldn't need our body in the first place. And what's this so-called human soul supposed to feed on? Everything alive needs energy, yet we have this 'magical' thing which needs nothing? Sorry, but sprites & goblins and witches are more credible.

Anybody surprised that I don't believe in ghosts. Ghosts were big in 1900. You know what else was becoming big in 1900? Electric night light, and then cars. Old people seeing strange reflections from windows, drafty homes, superstitious minds; it's no wonder they believed it was some type of ghost.

Uh oh, I can see it coming: A thread about ghosts, slowly dwindling to another religious debate. It's not gonna be me that does it this time!

Personally, I don't believe in ghosts. I've never seen one and never been in a spooky situation that I couldn't come up with a plausible explanation for. But if you want to hear a story about potential ghosts, actually a woman I work with told me one the other day. Apparently her house is haunted by the ghost of a little girl. Said little girl tends to take things, and only returns them when asked nicely. She also tends to be very noisy when the tension is high in the house. I've never been inside my coworker's house, so I can't confirm anything she's told me, but she swears to it.

I just think things like this make for interesting stories. It doesn't matter that I don't believe in them

Silly girl. You just need to say five Hail Mary's and ten Our Fathers, then I'll splash you with holy water. That'll keep the ghosts at bay.

My girlfriend and her family are big believers and so I've learned to quell the incredible rage that I feel when somebody mentions supernatural phenomena in a non-facetious manner.

Perhaps that's too strong. I feel that belief in anything is fascinating and should be preserved, because it appears to be one of the only things which unifies humanity entirely. Some cultures still exist which have no written form of communication, very limited mathematics (1, 2, 3 and many) and a very stinted vocabulary, but every society believes in something or has some form of mythology. For that, I think that things such as 'supernatural phenomena' should be appreciated for what they are.

Of course, believe what you want, and I'd never challenge somebody's right to believe in ghosts. In fact, I'd fight for it. But people who live in the modern world, in developed countries, should know better.
    Insert profundity here.

You die and you receive judgment. There is no "getting sidetracked."

My aunt, who works at a hospital as a surgeon and the head of Neurology, is a very no-nonsense person. She scoffs at the idea of ghosts, and considers the idea absurd.

She has, however, heard footsteps running, at night (on more than one occasion) through the floor above her in an impossible manner, as if the person were running perpendicular to the walls. In other words, the footsteps were consistent with someone running THROUGH the walls.

She has no explanation for it, but assures anyone she tells that it can't possibly be a ghost. There must be SOME explanation, she says. My belief is that it was some sort of pressure in the piping.

I, also, don't believe in ghosts, but I have seen things that challenge the mind. I was visiting my mother and stepfather a few years agao, and he and I were both watching television on the couch, when I saw movement in the hallway, as if a person had walked from the bedroom into the bathroom. I looked at him and said, "wait, is my mother home?" He furrowed his brows and said "..no.."

I believed he was trying to trick me, and my mother had snuck into the bathroom to jump out and surprise me. So I did one better.. I snuck up into the hallway and jumped into the bathroom, yelling "HUWAH!".. but to my shock, there was no one in the bathroom at all. I could have sworn I saw someone go in there. My stepfather looked at me like I was weird.

A week later, he called me and said "Kyle, guess what.. I saw it, too. Out of the corner of my eye, as if someone had walked into the bathroom." To add to this story, they called an electrician several times about the light fixture in that hallway, which was constantly flickering on and off. Every time the electrician checked and said nothing was wrong. They even changed the bulb many times. I should add that across the street of their residence was a cemetary.

One afternoon my stepfather was napping when someone sat down on the bed next to him. He felt the matress sink down next to him, and heard the springs compress. He opened his eyes, thinking it was my mother, but my mother was in the other room, watching television.

They've since moved. That doesn't mean there were ghosts, they moved for other reasons, but there was many unexplained incidents at that residence, including coming home one evening to find every single appliance in the household had been turned on (television, stereo, blender, fans, air-conditioner, all the lights, everything was on). They reported it as a break-in.

Now me, personally, I think the idea of ghosts is illogical. It would imply a spirit, of which no scientific evidence has been found.

I do, however, believe there is some merit in the possibility of alternate realities, like parallel dimensions, and at times these dimensions may intersect (meaning they aren't fully parallel), and these intersecting points may very well be the cause of ghostly phenomena, such as seeing transparent people, and hearing voices and laughter.

A man at my uncle's workplace died last year. The man always spent his time spinning in his desk chair when he was supposed to be working. The desk chair was caught, on security camera, spinning late at night when nobody was in the room, a week after the man died. Hard to explain, but very interesting to think about. Objectively speaking, I believe it must have been a gust of wind that caused the chair to move, or even possibly a stray animal snuck in and bumped the chair, unseen from the camera.

Long story short, I believe every phenomena can logically be explained, but I hold open the possibility of things we don't yet understand.

If they exist, I don't want to know about it. That stuff scares the living daylights outta me. I refuse to watch those "Paranormal Activity" movies. I wouldn't sleep for a month if I did watch them!! I'm a big baby when it comes to that stuff. I know so many people who claim to have seen a ghost or felt a ghost touching them. If anything spooky happens to me, I can always find something realistic to blame it on, or I try to.

And Kyle, hospitals do have some pretty freaky stuff happening in them. I used to work security at one the biggest hospitals in Toronto. Our offices were down in the basement, next to the morgue. I hated to go in there. The bodies lined up in black body bags almost made me hurl everytime. My co-workers warned me that you would see shadows moving down the hall, but I never believed them.

One night when I was doing my rounds, it was dark and scary in the old shut down part of the hospital. They were rebuilding a new wing, but they made us do our rounds in the old abandoned area anyway. There were beds that were tipped on their sides, old IV poles and heart machines just hap-hazardly sitting in the wierdest places. Well, I swear you could hear voices talking, kids crying, machines beeping, and the lights definitely did flicker. I always jogged through that part, telling myself it was just my imagination. I swear I could feel every hair on my arms standing on end. After seeing the stupid shadows outside of the morgue one night, and not knowing what to blame it on? I quit! It was too much for me... well that, and having to help with the out of control psych patients. I'm just too timid for a job like that.

Ghosts aren't real, we just conjure them up in our minds because we can't explain what just happened.

“And now I’m looking at you,” he said, “and you’re asking me if I still want you, as if I could stop loving you. As if I would want to give up the thing that makes me stronger than anything else ever has. I never dared give much of myself to anyone before – bits of myself to the Lightwoods, to Isabelle and Alec, but it took years to do it – but, Clary, since the first time I saw you, I have belonged to you completely. I still do. If you want me.” ― City of Glass by Cassandra Clare.
