First, you and Christians don't talk about the same Jesus, so please preface that. You think of Him as some wise Guru as opposed to God in flesh on earth, an important distinction.
Now, I don't know why you're wondering what Writ's point was, since it was directly in response to your statement about melting down gold to feed the poor. His point was that the clergy are not rich, the operational costs of Vatican City are below standard for cities of that size (or smaller), that the majority of the wealth is due to the cultural value of the buildings and works, and that even if you scraped all the gold off the walls you'd hardly put a dent in the living conditions of the world.
Jesus only sends a mixed message if you have a mixed view of Jesus (check) and difficulty interpreting scripture like a Christian would. (check)
Jesus doesn't think Christians should seek wealth, but making offerings to celebrate and elevate God are acceptable. Thus, you shouldn't be all blinged out walking around the streets, but if you wanted to hold a feast to celebrate Easter, donate a million dollars to build a nicer looking church, or anything else like that, go for it.
Simple.
