In my opinion the Tea Party will prove to be a transient movement. I think most Tea Partiers were elected by folks who have become tired of the 'good-ol'-boy style of politics in the US. Lyndon Johnson's "Silent Majority" wanted to be heard, and to shake up Washington. It worked. Perhaps not in the healthiest way, but it worked. I hope -- and to a great extent, I believe -- that future elections will help to better define the wishes of the voters.
Politicians often campaign on a platform of 'change' and then once in office just continue doing the same things in the same way. Well, the Tea Party promised change, and delivered. Change is usually uncomfortable, and often unpredictable, the system needs to find its equilibrium again. 2012 should be an interesting year (even if you discount that pesky December 21st thing).![]()
No harm or arrogance intended in the title.
"America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea."
It has just become a universal word for the United States. This goes back long before any of our Great Grandparents' parents were even a twinkle in the eyes of their parents. My use of the word does not mean I am ignorant to other countries within the Americas or see them as inferior to the US. It is the only country (not continent) with the word America in its name, therefore it has taken on the shorter name of America with most people, instead of having to say "The United States of America."
continued... many people in South America call United States Football futbol americano (American Football), just as many througout the world refer to American troops, American casualties, etc. When Islamic extremists cry "Death to America!", they are not refering to Brazil or the Caribbean. My point is that the United States of America is reffered to as 'America' througout the world, not just here in the states. I'm not trying to overstate my point here Garza; I am just explaining that I don't think my use of the word America is a result of ignorance or arrogance.
