    Economic Meltdown...

Have any of you done anything to prepare?

If not, are you planning on doing anything now?

Is this going to be just another cyclical correction? Or are we in for a long term '70s style stagflation? Or worse...

What did you have in mind, as far as preparation?

People have a love of convincing themselves terrible things are just over the horizon; it makes life more exciting. Bums on street corners with their doomsday signs. That radio-vangelist who recently made an ass out of himself predicting the rapture. Chicken Little. The umpteen times Jehova Witnesses called the end of the world. And while I must admit there's a certain emotional appeal to these ideas, how likely are they? How likely is it the economy will collapse? Mmmmmm. . . I'd hold out on that one.
Let's see if my above post is deleted without explanation. Wouldn't be the first time.

What amazes me is how blind people are to how this is all going to happen again because of our government's failure to regulate the derivatives market. Everything we are currently doing in attempt to right our sinking ship -- all of our lost jobs, lost home values, standard of living, etc., is all in vein if we do not demand that our politicians regulate this part of the market. It's not if, but when this ticking time bomb will demolish Main Street again. We will rebuild our economy again some day, as will other countries, but the dominos will all fall across the planet once more. When will we finally learn from history? We are all paying for the sins of wealthy elitists who are responsible for none of the 14.5 trillion dollar tab. But in many people's eyes, greed is no longer a sin; it is a virtue. I encourage people to watch a documentary called The Warning. You can find it at PBS.org.

The bigger question is what type of collapse will occur if the new debt ceiling is reached?
That should be fun to watch.

I’ve stocked my basement with plenty of booze, water, freeze-dried goodies and ammunition -- a few board games, books and a pack of cards too. I’ve tried to mob-proof the best I can – but I’m ready to go out in a blaze of glory.

Be sure to pack a chain-saw to hack off the searching, groping limbs that will inevitably come snaking through your smashed windows and fractured doors. That Homer Simpson trick doesn't work in real life!

I've tried to amass as much debt as humanly possible. That way, when the market collapses and everyone defaults, I'll have all my physical goodies and vacations and stuff already taken care of, and will no longer owe anything for them.

I'm in decent shape and a fairly good shot, so I think I can get a grocery cart of something out of the supermarket when the time comes.

Heh. Thanks. But no self-respecting southern boy doesn't have a chain saw -- so I'm good.

Hey elite -- what's the spam for -- are you supposed eat it while you're locked up in your basement or throw it at the zombies to distract them??

There is nothing anyone can do.
It can just be a false alarm. Maybe someone somewhere is trying to' trigger worry' people because they have nothing else to do.
    Who knows??

That wouldn't work for me. I'm not paying my wife anything now.
