    Rupert Murdoch's Humble Day

Rupert Murdoch, facing MPs over the News of the World phone hacking affair, has claimed that today has been the most humble day of his life. The question is, will anything really be achieved by the questioning of Rupert and James Murdoch apart from a public wringing of hands?

The most humble or the most humbling day? Murdoch being humble makes me think of Tony Blair being 'really sincere'.

Well, I haven't seen anything indicating he had knowledge of the illegal activities being taken by the companies he owns. The ongoing arrests of the parties accused of the crimes is the appropriate response to their actions. For a man that likes to lord over others, I think the ongoing embarassment of the proceedings, combined with the financial losses on his papers and cancellation of his media deal are appropriate financial and social penalties.

I'm not baying for Murdoch's blood. I'm just questioning what will be achieved by this enquiry to ensure that such tactics aren't employed by others. As for Rupert and James Murdoch, I doubt that they'll be going hungry regardless of the failure of the media deal. The Sun is picking up the slack from the News of the World and I notice that allegations made against the Sun and the Times, for similar practices, haven't progressed very far.

I see that Sean Hoare, the whistle blower on the phone hacking, has been found dead. Police say there are no suspicious circumstances. These are not the same police that made the decision there was no basis for reopening the phone hacking enquiry, that was Yates who has resigned. Rest easy every one, he has been replaced by Cressida Dick, who was in charge of the team that shot Jean Paul de Menezes dead with eight bullets to the head while he was held down, be reassured, I know he was innocent and they told lies about it in the immediate aftermath, but the inquiry established it was justified, so I am sure this present enquiry will be equally stringent.

Well, I think that bloke that stormed after him is a bit humbled after Murdoch's wife put the slap down on him.

Somehow something like that seems more than a little bit coincidental to me.

Seems you English have a lot of conspiracies going on. By the way, how many bullets to the head of a man does it take to kill him? Talk about overkill.

Conspiracy theories are emerging around the whole Rupert Murdoch affair. Although he had "friends at court" Murdoch is still something of a Maverick. There are other influential people who are pleased to block his ambition and reduce his media power.

I guess being rich and powerful brings with it friends as well as enemies, Baron.

Mae West had the best quote for that, writ. "Money can't buy you friends, but you sure get a better class of enemy"

I think what Rupert Murdoch has done is described by this quote.

"keep your friends close, but your enemies closer"

I"m still betting there's some undertow the rest of us aren't seeing. With all this money and power, the root of this corruption probably runs deeper and there are elements at work underneath the tip that want to stay hidden.

But I'm not one for conspiracy theories. A bit too Messianic and the truth is usually more complicated.

I'm a bit ignorant of News Corp's structure and Murdoch's management style, but wasn't News of the World a very small segment of his business. If so, why would UK officials think he would have insight into the secret goings on at one of his smaller papers?

because similar, though not identical, things seem to have occurred at other of his papers, I expect you are aware of the Confucian philosophy that morality percolates down from the top.

I hadn't heard of any issues at his other papers. I will do some research.

Allegations have been made against the Sun and the Times but these don't seem to be drawing the publicity.
