I think England should run its own game. It should be up to the Football Association to set up goal-line technology whether UEFA let us do it or not. We can then change all sorts of rules to make the game fairer. The worst UEFA can do is kick us out of the Champions League. But without foreign players at our clubs we'd be token presences in the tourney anyway, just like we are in internationals.

Rather than cleaning up FIFA or UEFA, I'd prioritise sorting out our own league first.

Why? What's wrong with English FA?

Of course there are things wrong with the FA, but I never really said anything was wrong with it- other than they're a bit handcuffed by UEFA in what they can and can't do. In 1981 (I think) we began 3 points for a win. Bit by bit, other countries followed. I don't think the FA could make any changes today without approval from UEFA.

Without replays for critical decisions such as penalties, goals, redcards etc., the game is too open for incompetence and even corruption in the form of pressure on referees to favour certain teams. Sometimes pressure from players, managers, home crowds, and sometimes from their bosses. Referees are very ambitious - they want to referee that champions' league semi, then final, then even the world cup final.

In the last world cup final, Howard Webb was criticised for not redcarding two or three dutch players. But it would have ruined the final and he would have been blamed for that too. Replays would defend him and UEFA don't want replays.

I remember Graham Poll (english ref) booking a player three times in the world cup 2006 then sending him off - not realising the player had been booked twice already. Apparantly, Poll was in tears afterwards on being booted out of the world cup at the first hurdle ("Fool Poll's Coming Home!).

    Spider,
First my apologies for my late reply,
I agree with you that the English FA is hampered by UEFA, who have run a few of these trials at a lower league level, Blue Square I think or though it may have been lower. These were the four linesmen, [lines-persons or whatever they are calling them now!] per game idea, one in each half. The trouble with replays is, by definition the game has to be televised, although I believe that Sky does cover all games down to Non-league level, [Blue Square or whatever thats called these days!]. It's really the Premier League that has the clout and I'm sure that if they really wanted it they would go with it. Remember they broke away from the FA, over money! FA rules states that gate receipts are shared, premier league rules states that gate receipts are kept by the home side.

The cynic in me believes that you won't see replays in the English game, it would make it too honest! Until their has been a case or cases of match fixing, then to clean it up they will introduce replays. I can't see of any reason of why it is not in now as most other global team games.
Personally I would like to see two independent time keepers at every game who would stop the clock every time the ball is out of play. Sky started doing this and were quietly stopped as it showed the ball in play less than 60 mins for most games.
Still think the only way to clean them all up is to deny them money, don't think that sponsors will want their brands associated with half empty stadia.

FIFA should be renamed Fifi and then it really would be Blatter's poodle.
This was the best laugh I've had all day, spanx for that
Jeez, why don't those guys just go and auction their votes on ebay? I mean... everybody knows and it would increase their cut now that Qatar is no longer handling the sales.

Anyway, I usually don't buy any products that sponsor anything for the simple reason, that I rather pay for my own food and clothes rather than paying for other peoples'. As for that game in general - why not watch rugby instead? It's far more interesting. Maybe they could allow pitchforks to give it a little more juice...
