What The Hell Were They Thinking ?

For those who believe that prison is inhumane and sentences too long, peruse the followig.
Disclaimer: The following news stories are not for the squeamish. Graphic descriptions of horrific crimes follow.
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston man is facing a felony charge, accused of disfiguring his estranged wife in a brutal attack.
According to court documents, Gregory Longoria, Jr., 39, met his estranged wife at her parents' home on Wednesday and demanded she and their one-year-old daughter go back to his apartment. He reportedly threatened to kill the woman's elderly and disabled parents if she didn't comply.
The woman told deputies that Longoria forced her to take off her clothes so he could take nude, obscene photographs of her.
The woman said he then tied her to the bed posts with extension cords and began to hit her. He allegedly burned her body using a can of hairspray and a cigarette lighter, gagged her with a rag, choked her with a belt and placed a pillow over her face, causing her to lose consciousness.
Doctors say the victim will require reconstructive surgery and will suffer permanent disfigurement.
Longoria is charged with aggravated assault of a family member. No bond has been set. He had a previous aggravated assault conviction from 1992.

4 Accused Of Gang Rape Of Girl, 11

CLEVELAND, Texas -- Four people have been charged in connection with a gang rape of a middle school student in Cleveland, police said Friday.
Investigators said that over the Thanksgiving holiday, an 11-year-old girl was assaulted by as many as 10 boys or men in an abandoned Liberty County trailer
The investigation originally focused on students at Cleveland High School, but none of those charged so far attend the school. The defendants were identified as Jared Len Cruse, 18; Timothy Daray Ellis, 19; Rayford Ellis, Jr., 19; and Isaiah Rashad Ross, 21.
Ross is the son of Cleveland School board member Billy Ross, who declined to talk with media. The suspects were charged with continuous sexual assault of a young child, a charge that means prosecutors believe all four men had more than one sexual encounter with the girl. Cleveland police said the investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected. The girl was removed from school shortly after the rape allegation came to light. She is being taught outside a traditional classroom setting, school officials said.

Personally, I don't think that my tax dollars need to go to support people like this while they watch TV, lift weights, rape smaller, weaker inmates and file endless appeals, all on the tax payer's dime. People who do things like this do not belong in normal society for sure, but some of them thrive on prison and don't bat an eye about going back. They become institutionalized and see prison as three hots and a cot. Chain gangs used to be a common thing as prisoners cleaned up trash, broke stones into gravel and did other things. There is plenty of work that needs to be done and prison should be undesirable, not a relaxation mode.

I see the same one walking down my road every day. He is covered with prison tatts and he is always smoking and talking on the cell phone. Looking at the traffic where he goes, he is obviously dealing drugs and has no intention of getting a job.

I also don't see why someone spends years on death row winding down every possible appeal. I know there are those who will point out that some on death row have been proven innocent by DNA evidence, but by large, 99.9% are guilty. The Hollywood tear jerker for the liberals, "Dead Man Walking", was it supposed to make people feel sorry for the jerk in the movie? He laughed as he shot the girls boyfriend, then raped and shot her. People like this need swift justice.

I remember when that evil cat Steven Avery brutally raped and murdered a young woman after being released from prison on DNA evidence - and the hard work of students and volunteers - proving his innocence.

He was a rapist and had raped other women just not the one he was convicted of raping before his exoneration.

Twisted family. His nephew showed up at his trailer, he showed him the young woman bound, and offered his nephew sex with her. Nice uncle. Lovely influence.

Victim: Steven Avery, junk yard owner, killed Teresa Halbach ? Crime Library — Teresa — Crime Library on truTV.com

Her murderer: Freed by DNA, Now Charged in New Crime

Advocates for the falsely convicted face the uncomfortable consequences of success now that a man exonerated in a sexual assault has been charged with murder.

Everyone in prison is not violent and cruel like some of the people mentioned in this thread though.

You also have wrongly convicted people. I'm not willing to lynch some person and find out later I participated in lynching some innocent person. That would make me a murderous criminal. I would have participated in a great injustice.

Many wealthy white collar criminals go before civil courts whereas many poor and blue collar people go before criminal courts when being tried. The former seeks degrees of culpability and often prescribes financial fines or restitution. The latter casts moral judgment and seeks absolute responsibility on one party (the defendant) and punishes to make and example before society at large.

I see no reason more crimes can't be handled like the white collar ones typically are.

Taking extreme examples and using sensationalism to preach lynch mob mentality is hardly in line with the expression of Christian faith.

If you watch Dead Man Walking and pay any attention to it, it's pretty clear that they're trying to lull you into feeling a bit sorry for the Sean Penn character, but in the end, they reveal how horrific the crime was,his true role and all the details, and most people come away from it not feeling much sympathy for him -- even those who oppose the death penalty. Of course, the nun is opposed to it, because of her religious convictions, but that isn't surprising.

The movie is all about redemption, accepting responsibility and forgiveness -- and overall, it’s fairly neutral on the question of the death penalty. It leaves you with a lot of questions -- and that's really the point of the movie. Of course if you go into it with a certain mindset or if you're prejudiced by the politics of the director and actors -- and you don't have the imagination or ability to put that aside, you're not going to understand what the movie is really about.

I didn't see the whole movie, just caught the end of it but that was enough. Christian values are good and important, but those who rape and kill hope they will get Christians on their jury. Most have no remorse at all other than getting caught. For example child molesters, there is no cure for this and they will commit this crime again and again. I consider myself a Christian, but if someone kicked our door in in the dead of the night, I wouldn't try to reason with them. I wouldn't even give them a chance, I'd blow them away without batting an eye. I wouldn't feel the least bit of pity for them.

Granted, a lot of people behind bars aren't violent, some merely stole the life savings of an elderly couple leaving them destitute, others got drunk and killed someone behind the wheel of a car on their third DWI conviction. But the overall majority of those in prison deserve to be there and have committed a lot of acts of violence upon the innocent before finally getting caught, receiving probation, then re committing another crime.

To quote examples of the vilest offences and then claim that all who are in prison should be tarred with the same brush is two dimensional thinking at its worst. To denigrate Christians who would view cases on their merits rather than be influenced by emotive sensationalism show a complete failure to understand the Christian message.

I've heard that the KKK claim to be Christians but I wouldn't like to stand in the shoes of any one of them come judgment day.

I don't think that God would want us to just stand by and not defend our family or self from someone who is evil and bent on doing you harm.

I don't see how this relates to your previous post or my reply to it. I'm honestly having problems figuring out if you really believe some of the things you say or if you're just posting as a wind up.

Ha ha. Classic. So you didn't see how all the characters were affected or how they reacted to what happened -- and you're OK with judging the movie based on your knee-jerk reaction to catching the end of it.

Too funny. I think that about sums up whether or not you should be taken seriously about any of this.

Someone, not me, recently said of Hollywood "I've spit deeper puddles than the depth of Hollywood movies coming out today." I lump Dead Man Walking in that group, matter of fact, for me, the Pixar movies and Tangled are the only movies with depth I've seen in the past two decades (with a handful of others). I could go on, but the thread isn't supposed to be sidetracked.

As much as I'd like serial killers and rapists to die burned by the flames of redemption, allowing death penalty would in theory make killing "bothersome" people a much easier task for corrupt people. There is also the fact that many innocent people are actually falsely accused of murder and are unable to prove their innocence.

I do agree, though, that prisons should actually make convicts be of some use to society. Maybe manufacture something or whatever, and that money would pay for the prison costs.

There are a lot of very good films made in Hollywood if you bother to look past the big blockbusters. If your sole source of movies is the top ten at the box office or what played at the multiplex -- then yes, there isn't a lot of depth.

I wasn't all that crazy about Dead Men Walking. I though it was a decent movie, if not a little too obvious. I was simply commenting on the fact the Ditch didn't get it, and how silly it is to judge something without having seen anything but the ending.
