    That's what I said.

Gaza- I don't like the way your source eulogises the deaf "They have a lyrical command of language", "They are wonderful artists". It is my belief that, apart from being deaf, they are probably no different from anyone else.

Blood- On second thoughts, no need to train and pay a specialist group, I bet we could find volunteers who feel quite adequate to taking these decisions for free.

Some of you fail to realize that humans have surpassed evolution. We've taken it into our own hands. How can you imagine the world moving on without us?

You know, assuming we don't wipe ourselves out.

Olly - My apologies. I only read the top half of the article and did not see the way it talks about deaf people, which is in itself dangerous because it says 'some people are created more equal then others'. (apologies to George Orwell)

Being near-sighted I faced two attitudes growing up that I hated. One was rather openly expressed by my third grade (standard one) teacher who said I was stupid because I could not read what was written on the blackboard from my seat in the back of the classroom. She made a note in my cumulative folder that I was mildly retarded and should not plan on going to high school. The other attitude was expressed by my eighth grade (standard six) teacher who said I was special because I always looked for a close-up picture of the world and thus could see what others could not see. I could have done very well without either attitude being expressed.

While I never would say to a deaf child, 'you are disabled', neither would I say, 'because you are deaf you are special'. Neither would help.

Having other's ideas of one thrust upon one is rarely helpful. I have been known to say that "I am special, being badly burnt at birth gives me a high pain threshold and a lot of tolerance, on the other hand it can be deceptive sometimes, I have learned to use the advantages and make allowances for the deception" that leaves them to realise their own unique feature's pros and cons for themselves.
