The vampire genre is by no means dead. In fact, I believe yours truly posted a vampire short in the writer's workshop not two days ago. Oh yeah. First, and likely the last, of my forays into vampirism.
Let's see if my above post is deleted without explanation. Wouldn't be the first time.

    I believe it's undead.
Wherever I sat - on the deck of a ship or at a street café in Paris or Bangkok - I would be sitting under the same glass bell jar, stewing in my own sour air.

I don't think it is dead. I just finished The Passage by Justin Cronin and it is amazing and so different from what you would think of a typical vampire novel. It is mixes post-apocalypse, zombie-ish, coming of age, and action adventure quiet nicely. I can't wait for the next book and the movie!

Another good series is the Ethical Vampire Series by Susan Hubbard. The first book of that, The Secret Society of S, I started reading it not knowing that it was a vampire novel. I thought it was going to be a simple coming of age story with some mysterious intrigue of a secret society, and then bam like two thirds into the book it hits you that there are vampires.

And the thing is that both of these authors or literature professors, these books are their first shot at writing in the genre, and it proves that it just needs some new blood, no pun, oh well yes the pun was intended. But with it being so different, it will not be such a hit anymore since it will be as diverse as any other genre. The only reason it is such a big hit now is because of the recession so many women are clamoring for love stories with immortal heart throbs, and the fall back story line is what sells best at these times.

I think twilight put the nail in the coffin (pun was totally intended). After reading all four books, i cna truly say that its...awful. I hate to say it, but i'm not sure where the author was going with this. I cna see real signs of mormonism in the book, and the heavy influences it has on it. The characters seem bland, and the fact that it took the sexy, seductive, yet deadly vampire and turned it into a sparkly british guy is horrific.
