He's swimming these events faster than anyone has ever swam before. That doesn't boggle your mind and make you interested in watching? In your lifetime, you are privileged to watch a man swim faster (not the sprint, I know) than anyone in the last thousand years. You should be bringing the kids to the TV and pointing to him, not trying to downplay his achievement.
Although I spent the weekend watching the little league world series more than the olympics.

I'm interested in his achievements, but I must admit, competitive swimming does not excite or entertain me.

You should have seen the last 50M of the 4x100, then: that was one of the most exciting sports things I've ever seen. Same for the finish in his 100M butterfly that he won by .01 seconds. Unbelievable.

Didn't you swim competitively Malone? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Someone else. I swam in the YMCA competitions when I was like two on the floaty boards (and won, still have the little medal and ribbon). Nothing since. I may have mentioned swimming a lot and playing water polo, but nothing official.

Ah, so you're one of those close-minded nitwits who thinks money equals happiness. Boo.
Boooooooooooo.

Jesus Christ. No, I don't think that. I was just being a little sarcastic. I really hope you are too, unless I'm giving you too much credit.

So Joeboe, picture this.
You can't walk to the store without a hundred people screaming your name and trying to get you to sign various paraphernalia. If you want to get a seat at a restaurant you have to also reserve every nearby seat just to get an undisturbed evening. Everyone you used to know calls you up trying to be friends again. You can no longer tell who really likes you and who just wants money. You can't keep money on you anymore because you're a walking target for thieves. Oh, and you can buy whatever you want, but you can't get too comfortable because if you do you will instantly lose the milligram of muscle that is the difference between a win and a loss, and therefore your sponsorship is out.
It may be good for Phelps, or you, but not me. I'll just be happy without everyone annoying me.

I don't know about that. When I see famous athletes or celebrities I don't charge them screaming. Maybe a nod at most. I think the paparrazi are the only ones who mob famous people.

Famous people can be happy. Just because it isn't a life you would fancy doesn't mean that other people would be miserable as well. If it was so horrible don't you think there would be more people that would drop out of the scene?
I live in an area where there are several celebrities and they do not get mobbed by the general public. Most people know that they are just normal people. I'm not saying it never happens, but it isn't as bad as you describe.

I think the celebrities who's lives are screwed up get the press. There are plenty who are perfectly content with fame and the perks that come with it.
