I kind of wish the had for Iraq, actually. THAT would have mobilized antiwar protest, since none of the other good reasons did.
I think they know that and won't draft.

I doubt it'll ever happen again, at least not in this country. We've not really had it except in situations of national importance. Not that I think it wouldn't be a good idea, as long as you could opt out of the military.

I think I remember that this was an actual strategy, and the reason some democrat -- I think it was that weird little elf, Kucinich -- proposed that the draft be reinstated. Of course, it was just to make a point. Pushing it would be political suicide.

I became interested in this question after being bitterly dissapointed at the attitudes on the "F*ck the Police" thread.
Personally, as an AS-level student hoping to go into Sandhurst as soon as he's finsihed his A-levels, you can probably take a stab in the dark as to what my feelings are.

I'm guessing Sandhurst is a Military Academy in England?

Cossack,
My view of individual soldiers is no different than my view of any profession. Except that in this one you can die. They work hard and they depend on each other. I have allot of respect for them. I served in a combat MOS in peacetime in South Korea, in the late 70's, and believe me, they play soldier over there. So I at least have some idea of the job these folks do. There are some who hate the military. And I pray for the day that they need their help. And I hope they don't get it. They will be the first to speak against the military and the first whining puss bags to cry for help should the balloon go up.
As for how the US military stacks up against any other nation's? I'll put our best against anyone else's best. With no worries about the outcome.
As for the rep they deserve? Let's let the historians sort that one out when it's all said and done in Iraq and Afghanistan. News reporting is a rough draft of history and 90% of the good things going on never see the light of day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as media bias, is either a fool or a lyer.

Whoa there, nelly. Let's not even start this one.
I agree wtih what you've said about poor media coverage. You apparently can't get reporters out to a new school opening in Afghanistan for love nor money. The fact that we have engineers there doing the very best they can with a poor hand is almost never mentioned.
