a question about etiquette

I know you're supposed to let a magazine editor know up front if you're submitting your story to other publications as well, but what if you didn't originally plan on doing so? Should I send them an Email to tell them that I intend to submit my story elsewhere as well and will let them know immediately if it's accepted, or should I just not submit it anywhere else until I hear back from them?

I don't say anything unless they specifically ask but I have a personal policy of the first to ask for the manuscipt gets right of first refusal. The most important thing it to let them know if it gets accepted elsewhere so they aren't wasting time reading something you've sold.
