Hey guys,
I have an essay to write integrating US history and American literature (The Road, by Cormac McCarthy), and it's suppose show the novels connection to an era, event, idea, or movement in American history. I've devised two ways to combine the two disciplines, by either:
1. discussing how the ideas presented in The Road change throughout the decades of American history -or-
2. discussing what Cormac McCarthy's view of the American Dream is
The structure is suppose to be three-pronged, with three topics to prove my arguments with both literature (3 paragraphs) and history (3 paragraphs). My teacher is awful at trying to explain where to start in creating a thesis around this novel (was not such an good choice, but it's too late now), so I hope you guys can help me out in some way.
An example would be:
Larson illustrates how Native Americans represented the ideal qualities of Americanism, as seen through their appreciation of nature, spiritual enlightenment, and respect for all forms of life. The thesis notes the three "topics" at the end.
The Road was great, but I simply have no idea in which way I should connect it to US history, and through what "topics" I can discuss my argument with
