The Sleeping part 1(ADULT CONTENT NOT GRAPHIC) 3600 words
This is a short story I completed a while back that im about to rewrite. I just wanted to get some input on it before i do. Sorry, its long. But read it in parts if you want and post on some of it. Warning there is adult content, but not graphic.
Frank lives in monotony, an existence in oblivion and craves change more than anything. He lives in an average town, in an average house and every morning he gets up, kisses his average wife goodbye on the cheek, and drives to his boring office job in his economy car. His wife was his highschool sweet and they married five years ago. They haven’t had sex in months and it seems like Frank has lost interest in everything.
During work, Frank spends his day avoiding his boss and only doing what he absolutely has to to get by. Half the day is spent sitting at his desk daydreaming or doodling on note pads. Many times he questions what exactly it is that stops him from jumping through the window of his office building and plummeting to his demise. He has yet to come up with an answer, but even then has not worked up the courage to do it.
When he gets home, his wife usually has dinner ready and on the table. Frank really did hate her cooking, but he never said anything to her about it. He would just eat it and then regret it a few hours later on the shitter.
After a couple of hours of watching television, they would both go to bed. Mary, his wife, would sit and read for a little while and Frank would roll over and try to fall asleep. Most nights he just lies awake and thinks about how things might have been different.
Tonight, Frank fell asleep right away with the aid of a sleeping pill. This was the night that things changed, and it started with a dream. He had a dream that he dare not tell his wife about, a dream about a woman that he had never met, never seen and for all he could tell, never existed. Her name was Gwen, but for the first time in as long as he can remember, he woke up smiling.
This morning, Frank kissed his wife, not on the cheek as he always did, but on the lips and then he ran out the door to go to work. Mary didn’t know what had come over her husband, but she knew something was different and she liked it. She smiled the rest of the day, even as she performed her average daily duties.
All day during work, Frank could still imagine every detail of the dream he had had that night. When the boss asked him to do an incredibly complicated report, Frank just smiled and did it with time to spare. The boss was impressed with Frank’s newfound enthusiasm and sudden change in work ethic.
That night Frank ate dinner with his wife like he did every night. “This tastes fantastic honey!” he exclaimed.
“But I haven’t done anything different with the food” she smiled “What makes it so fantastic tonight?”
Frank looked over his plate carefully. The meatloaf that sat there had a sudden change in flavor tonight. He couldn’t explain it, but even the canned corn seemed gourmet. “I don’t know, but everything today has seemed, just a little better than yesterday and the day before that and the day before that”.
Mary smiled. She hadn’t seen her husband act like this in a few years now. “What’s made today so different than any other day?” she asked.
“I’m not sure, maybe something to do with how well I slept last night?”
“Well maybe you should get some extra sleep again tonight?”
And that is just what Frank did. He was ready and in bed an hour early. He drifted into sleep quickly and again he dreamed. Tonight he was in a park on a beautiful spring day and he was having a picnic with a lovely young lady. She wore a floral print sundress that clung to her body. Her hair was the color of honey, long and draped over her shoulders. Her eyes were a reflective brown and Frank could see himself in them and his happiness. Her legs were long and crossed over his as they sat on a blanket, feeding each other fruit and sandwiches. It was Gwen again and they spent the rest of the night talking and eating.
Frank woke up again as happy as he had ever been. He leaned over in bed and kissed his wife to wake her. “Honey, I don’t think I’m going to go into work today. I really think we should spend the day together” he told his wife.
In a half daze, Mary barely understood what Frank was talking about. “But won’t you get into trouble with your boss?” she asked.
“I haven’t called in sick in two years, I think they can manage one day without me,” he said, kissing his wife again. “Besides, I would much rather spend the day with you.” He rolled over and made love to his wife for the first time in months.
They made love several more times that day, which left them with both a permanent glow. The difference between then and now wasn’t that they didn’t have sex, they just didn’t make love. Both of them, for the past year or so, had just gone through the motions, but something has changed. Mary couldn’t help but question this renewed energy in her husband, but she dare not complain about it and ruin a good thing.
That night Frank went to bed earlier still. He drifted into sleep and dreamt of Gwen again. This time they were having dinner in a fancy restaurant and danced for the entire evening. Frank walked her home that night in his dream. When they reached her doorstep, she kissed him. This was the first time that they had had any real physical connection. It was a kiss like no kiss Mary had ever given him; it was deep and full of life.
Frank slept late the next morning. It was the weekend and he saw no real reason to get out of bed. Mary was busy in the kitchen making breakfast and so in his half wakened state, he lay there to think more about Gwen. He tried hard to get back to her doorstep, but he was too awake and became obvious that it was just him imagining things. When Mary woke him for breakfast, he seemed a bit disappointed, but got up anyways
They spent the morning doing housework and in the afternoon sat around to watch a movie before dinner. It was when Mary got up to cook dinner, that Frank had an idea. If he had dreamt of Gwen every night, then maybe if he took a nap he would be able to see her again. So he did just that, he took a nap on the couch and again he dreamt of Gwen. They were at the beach this time, making out in the sand. It only lasted a few minutes before Mary woke him. “Honey, dinner’s ready,” she said.
Mary could tell that her husband was grumpy at the dinner table, but she didn’t know why. When she asked him about it, he would replay with “nothing” and comment on his headache. She became more worried when Frank went to bed immediately following dinner and didn’t wake up till early afternoon.
In his dreams that night, Frank dreamt of Gwen once more. This time, they spent their time together in bed. For the first time in all of his dreams of her, Frank was making love to Gwen. It went on for what seemed like hours and he had never felt anything more sensual. “You fulfill me in more ways than my wife ever could imagine"he told her.
She smiled as she looked up at him. “How could I possibly do that?”
“I don’t know, but you do. When I’m not with you, I’m not happy”. Gwen just continued to smile and leaned up to kiss him again. They made love three more times that night before Frank finally woke in the afternoon.
Frank called for his wife and when she came close to the bed, he pulled her to him. They engaged in a wonderful kiss as he pulled her to the bed. He tore at her clothes with a hunger that Mary hadn’t seen in her husband before, but delighted in. Every time Frank looked at his wife, he could only see Gwen. As they made love, he could only see Gwen in his wife’s eyes.
That night when Frank found Gwen, she was in a dark room. He didn’t even realize she was there till she lit her cigarette. “I think I know why I fulfill you, unlike your wife” she said as she turns on a dim light. She was wearing a trench coat and black lipstick. The eyeliner was heavy and Gwen didn’t look as innocent as she once did.
“Why is that?” he questioned, still a bit confused by what was going on.
“Because I’ll do what she won’t” she replied as she stood up and untied her trench coat. Underneath it she wore a leather bustier and garters. Her legs were clad in fishnet stockings and stiletto high heels were on her feet. “Things like this” she said as she walked over to Frank and dropped to her knees in front of him.
When they made it the bed, the sex was rougher than before. It made Frank almost feel dirty, but at the same time he was more excited than he had ever been. He only spoke in grunts and moans as he pinned her to the bed. “Harder Frank!” she repeated over and over.
“Not so hard, Frank” Mary pleaded, but Frank didn’t seem to hear her. “Frank you’re hurting me, please stop” she again pleaded. When Mary finally screamed for him to stop, he snapped out of whatever daydream had captured his attention.
Frank stopped and kissed his wife. “I’m sorry honey, I don’t know what came over me”. This wasn’t the first time this had happened in the last month or so. Sex between the couple had become emotionless. It was just a way for Frank to get off after thinking about Gwen all night. Most nights, after he was done with Mary, we would roll over and pass out without another word.
The next few months progressively got worse. Frank was sleeping more and more, and when he wasn’t sleeping he was unhappy. On average, he would miss at least one day of work each week, if not more. He barely spoke to his wife other than to get dinner or have his laundry done. They had stopped having sex and Frank found other ways to relieve himself. The situation only continued into a downward spiral, as Frank could not stand to be away from Gwen, the woman of his dreams.
One night in his dreams, Frank held Gwen in his arms and confessed his love for her. “I can’t handle life when we are apart” he said. “I force myself to find new ways to be with you. Every moment with you is precious. I love you Gwen”.
“Why would you want me when you have a beautiful wife that loves you?” Gwen asked.
“She doesn’t understand me like you do. She doesn’t make me feel the way you do”.
“Have you ever tried talking to her Frank? Maybe she just doesn’t know what you want.”
“I doesn’t matter anymore. I only want you. “
“Well then” she said, walking up to Frank and putting her arms around his neck. “Who am I to deny someone the one thing that they want?”
The alarm went off for the second time and Frank finally woke up to Mary shaking him. “Honey wake up, you’re going to be late for work!” she said and Frank became angry. He reached out and used all his might to bring his hand across Mary’s face. She fell to the floor holding her face and crying.
“Oh my god! I didn’t mean to do that Mary!” Frank picked her up and held her. She was still crying and her cheek now displayed a bright red handprint. He held her until she calmed down, apologizing again and again before rushing off to work. Frank had never raised his hand to Mary before, but then again, nothing was the way it had been before.
Mary spent the day hiding in her bedroom closet, crying until there were no tears left in her eyes. She had watched Frank become more and more distant over the last few months, until the man she married was no longer there. When Frank came home that night, he had brought her flowers, but they didn’t make her feel any better. He couldn’t even explain to her why he had hit her and when she thought she couldn’t cry anymore, the tears found a way to flow again.
Frank couldn’t take the crying anymore and went to bed early again. He met Gwen in his dreams like he always did and he told her what had happened. “I hit my wife today,” he said. “She didn’t deserve it, all she did was wake me up”.
Gwen smiled. “Did she like it?” she asked.
“What?” he asked in shock, a look of disgust and confusion on Frank’s face.
“Did she like it? Does she like it rough Frank?”
“No!” Frank replied. “She was crying. I hurt her”.
“Did you like it?” Gwen asked as she came closer to him. “Did you like the power? The control?”
“This isn’t right. I had no right to hit her!” the anger in his voice was becoming apparent.
“Admit it Frank, she deserved it. She’s a bitch that doesn’t know what she has,” she said as she came close enough to bite Franks lip. “You can hurt me Frank, if you want. And I promise I won’t cry about it”.
Frank raised his hand and brought it across Gwen’s face. “Stop it!” he screamed at her “ She’s my wife and I love her!” He hit her, knocking her to the ground. “She didn’t deserve this!”
Gwen wiped her mouth with her forearm. A small bit of blood from her lip smeared across it. “Mmm, Frank, please hurt me” she said, getting up to kiss him roughly.
