Sample Chapter

Hi all..This is something i've been working on. Let me know what you think, how I can make it better, ect.

He came in the summer of 2003 when our town was celebrating a certain “anniversary” that we townspeople don’t like to talk about much. It happened ten years before in 1993. It was a night like no other really. My boyfriend Bobby Lee had just proposed to me and I accepted. I had never been happier in my entire life that night. We decided to call my best friend, Julie to come along with us. Julie was the quiet type, kinda cute and mousy. She liked the “bad” boys but would never get up the courage to actually talk to any of them. To be quite frank, I think she had a thing for Bobby but I made it clear from the beginning NO one and I mean NO one was to dare take my Bobby away.
That night though, our entire lives changed. We had come in from outside the REGENCY theater and were standing at the concession stand. The guy behind the counter seemed to be looking at me and Bobby. I guess we seemed happy or something, but it was nice to have someone I was going to spend the rest of my life with.
“Did I ever tell you I loved you?” I told him.
“Yes you did, several times,” he just smiled at me.
We hadn’t been in the theater more than ten minutes when it happened. I heard glass shattering and then people started screaming. They didn’t know what was going on at first, but Bobby pushed me to the floor. I hit it hard, almost breaking my nose.
“Stay down while I go get Julie,” Bobby sounded panicked or something. “I love you,” he said to me as he went inside the actual theater to find Julie.
I remember laying there, wondering what was going on. Then I saw someone standing over by the window go down. I don’t know who she was, but the young girl was pretty with dark blonde hair. She fell to the floor, laying there lifeless.
“Bobby,” I screamed out. “Where are you?”
I was laying on the floor, glass shattering all over my back. I could hear gun shots coming from outside the parking lot. Bobby had been inside for about two minutes, but it seemed a lot longer than that.
There were people falling to the floor too, taking cover from whoever was shooting. It was real scary, and to be quite honest it seemed to last forever. Then the shooting stopped for a minute and I thought things were over. All the glass had been shot out and it was laying everywhere.
“Lisa,” Bobby called out to me in a frantic voice.
I looked up at him. “What is it baby?
“I got Julie, let’s get out of here.”
My Bobby was a strong man, with strong arms and a body to match. He had dark hair that he always kept short. I liked that because it was a major turn on for me. “Let’s get out of here,” he said again.
The next thing I remember was seeing him come towards me. Then Julie happened to look to her right and could see a truck still sitting in the parking lot. She froze. “Bobby,” she whispered.
“What?” he happened to look that way and threw Julie to the ground too.
“No,” I screamed as Bobby was shot three times in the chest. Blood went everywhere, and he fell to the ground. I sat there for I know five minutes, stunned as to what had just happened. Everyone around came up and huddled around me, but that’s what I was told.
Half an hour later, the ambulance showed up and gave me something but I can’t really remember. All I could remember for the longest time was Bobby falling to the floor. It seemed to be all in slow motion as he fell. From what Julie told me though, whoever it was in the truck sped off, leaving nothing behind.
A few days after the shooting, I went to the funeral but don’t remember much. I do remember talking to his mom and dad, brother and sister. And I remember Julie being right by my side.
“If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to ask. You know I’m here for you.”
Julie was my best friend, but about six months later she moved away. I hated that day because Julie was my life. Me and her had been best friends six we were six. I met her in kindergarten, and we just became really close friends. We stayed together all through high school and were going to both get married, have kids and become neighbors.
One day Julie came to me and said she was moving. “I can’t stay in this town Lisa. It’s too much to remember,” is what she told me. “Every single day I drive by that place and remember what happened.”
“I can’t blame you for leaving,” I told her. “If I could leave this town, I would too.”
She left town about two years after the shooting. I cried all day long the day she left, but realized it was probably for the best. Looking back though, I wish there was something I could have done to make her stay.

That line took me out of the moment. The scene was supposed to be tense and scary, suddenly she talks about how her fiancee's hair turns her on. While information like that is good, it'd best be placed somewhere else. In my opinion.

I did like this though. It moved at a good pace and was conversational and inviting, it kept me reading. If I have any advice, it would probably be "more development" concerning back story. I would personally like to know more about the narrator's relationship with Bobby. He seems to be introduced and killed off in a short space of time. Obviously I don't know how you're going to tell your story, but that's just a niggling from me. I want to know how deep was her love for Bobby and perhaps a little more angst.
