Cries In The Moonlight

The woman crouched on the edge of the rooftop. Her gaze lingered down on the street below. Rain began to fall. Droplets of water ran down her cheek. Her clothes clung to her body. Strands of her long blonde hair streaked the side of her neck. Her eyes never blinked for they were too focused on the immortal. Dematra rocked back on her heels when the one she tracked stopped. From her concealed position she watched him glance up in her direction.

Dematra held her breath. She knew he would be aware of her presence by now. After all, it had not taken her long to find him. He walked on. She continued to stroll along the ledge. When she came to the edge Dematra jumped. A few seconds later she landed in the crouched position in the dark alley, just feet from the immortal. Her berretta aimed solely on him. When she rose her finger tugged the trigger.

Rand stopped in his tracks. The bullet lodged itself in the wall just inches from his head. The light glowed. The bullet was no ordinary bullet. It was made to kill the likes of him. He touched it, the heat brushed against his finger. He had sensed the woman a few moments ago and had purposely ventured down this dark alley to flush her out. He raised his hands slowly.

"Turn around nice and slow." Dematra walked closer. "Who are you?"

Rand turned round. He looked the woman up and down. She was dressed head to foot in black. Her hair hung untamed round her shoulders. The sparkle of her blue eyes hypnotized him. "Name's Rand, and I think you already know I'm just like you."

Dematra tilted her head, a little intrigued. "Why have I not seen you before?"

"Because, just like you Miss Dematra, I've wanted to go unnoticed in this world."

"So why show yourself now?"

A blood curdled scream sounded from behind her. Dematra's head snapped to the side. Figures appeared in the alley. Rand pushed Dematra behind the dumpster. His finger pressed against his lips. The footsteps became more hurried. Within moments their scent became noticeable. They were werewolves. She tried to break free.

"Now is not the time to be a hero." Rand whispered. His grip tightened. "Our time will come soon enough."

The werewolves ravaged the woman. They drained her of every ounce of blood. Dematra closed her eyes as more of the victim's screams filled the alley. The coldness of the dumpster against her face soothed the anguish inside her. Long ago she had faced the fact she was a vampire, banished to a life of walking the earth forever. During that time she had witnessed many changes, both good and bad. But none scared her more then the werewolves, and of late, they seemed to be getting stronger.

Shadows rushed past. Her eyes threw open. She peered round the edge of the dumpster and watched two figures run back out to the street. They, like her, looked just like every day humans. But beneath that layer of skin lurked pure evil.

Rand released his hold and stepped back out into the alley. "I could tell you wanted to kill them my dear. But sometimes you have to let two escape to live to kill a hundred."

"I could have taken them easily." Dematra replied, not impressed by this one's attitude.

A hint of a smile danced across his lips but quickly disappeared. He could tell already this one was feisty. "I'm a death dealer just like you. But take it from one who has seen a lot more bloodshed, never go looking, trouble will soon find you. Now can we get pass this. I've been summoned by your council. Take me to them."

Rand heard footsteps approach fast. He spun on the heels of his boots. His hands fell quickly to his sides. When they rose again both clutched daggers. Without pause he threw them in the direction of the street. The two men appeared from the shadows. The daggers slammed into their throats. Rand snatched Dematra's berretta. The special bullets hit both assailants in the temple. The two fell to the ground. Their bodies jolted violently. The light from the magic bullets surged through their bodies. Within moments all that remained were the clothes they wore.

Rand handed Dematra back the berretta. "Those bullets do the job magnificently. Now lets get out of here. Werewolves always travel in packs."

He walked away. Dematra glanced at what remained of the werewolves. The bullets dissolved their existence from this earth. She quickly caught up with him. Both walked the rest of the way in silence. Dematra couldn't help but wonder just why this warrior had been summoned. But she guessed she would find out soon enough.

Kat is an unknown quantity at this point
It involves the reader well and has action without gore. Well done.

Thank you...I've haven't tried to write this kind of story before but have read other vampire short stories and they were full of gore, I wanted to avoid that and focus on action...am a bit of an action junkie...
