What does Freelance mean?

I was just wondering what it means if you're a freelance writer.

A person who acts independently without being affiliated with or authorized by an organization.

and

A person who pursues a profession without a long-term commitment to any one employer.

These are the best definitions I got on it's basic meaning. Much like what AdamR said. Hope that helps.
