Guide to Staff Ranks
Sure, you could pull out a set of dice and select one staff member completely at random, but how often does that work? Or maybe you'll hover over the list of names, close your eyes, and click your mouse on the one that feels right. Or maybe you'll fire off a PM to one and BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) every other one into the conversation just to be sure. Don't do that, by the way.
But if you had a handy reference guide for which member of staff to contact in a specific situation, well, that would be the best thing since sliced bread! It's a pity we don't have one of those. Oh, wait . . .
Members of the Board
The Owner: 'nuff said. Rumour has it that this member is still active behind the scenes despite wearing the Indigo cardigan and slippers of a retired Patron.
Administrators: Those big-shots with their blue robes! Who do they think they are? Well, it just so happens that they think they're the ones who make everything run. They aren't really, but we'll let them have their delusions. They always harp on about being responsible for making changes to policy this and policy that, but in reality they sit around all day wondering if they should change the wallpaper.
Oh, and they do make those policy changes, and deal with internal staff morale, and respond to outside agencies, and make sure the site's running smoothly, and oversee the entire forum – but only now and again!
So when should you approach them? Well, you need one goat's head, a pentagram, a chalice, and a summoning ritual to even make contact with them. But I hear they're the guys you want to speak to about technical forum issues, accessibility, and general forum problems. In fact, if you are unsure who to contact to begin with, Administrators are a pretty good place to bring any query to – if you can procure one goat's head, that is.
Representatives of the Board
Supervisors: Did you know that the second-in-command of any institution/organisation is the one who truly runs the show? No? Neither did I. But, for the purposes of moving this thing along, let's say I did – that would make Supervisors responsible for the day-to-day running of the bridge (if we were on a ship) and the oversight of all the members (if we were in an alternate dimension).
As members of the Admin team, it would also make them your first stop for any site-related queries, much like Administrators and more so when the latter is off-line. Also, if no Globals are on-line Supervisors can also be approached for moderation tasks – when they aren't busy picking the wallpaper colour.
Representatives to the Board
Supervisors: What, again? Yes. Supervisors lead double lives. When they are not considering the decor, or restocking the bar fridge, or keeping the Blue bunch safe from paper cuts and other forms of self-harm, Supervisors represent all volunteer staff generally, and all moderators specifically, in any matters that come before the Board.
Chief Mentors: As members of the Admin team, Chief Mentors are really friendly. They have to be; it says so in their job description.
Like all mentors, they are the welcoming face of the site. But unlike all mentors, they oversee the colour of the wallpaper – I mean, they oversee the entire mentor program and sit on the Board in representation of all those in purple.
Chief Media Managers: This plum job was created to coordinate the forum's social image and public message, and to make sure the curtains don't clash with the cushions. Having obtained the required PhD (Spin), the Chief Media Managers are responsible for driving WF's media strategy and planning the media team efforts so our Media & Content Managers can make it happen!
They often cackle evilly as they profess to having the keys to the site. We've never told them that their access doesn't extend to Potty's footlocker, but then again they wouldn't want in there.
Forum Moderators: Nobody stands out quite like Forum Moderators. Their high-viz orange robes are actually an inside joke designed by the Admin team to draw away all attention so they can concentrate on choosing the wallpaper. Forum Moderators moderate their own designated boards, that is when they aren't plotting world domination, one story or poem at a time.
If you see an orange staff member who appears to be stuck under the bottom of a forum, fear not. S/he is just lost – I mean, moderating that board. You can approach him/her for any moderation required there.
Advanced Mentors: These are Mentors who've taken advances to a whole new level. Every forum has someone who excels in specialist topics. The Advanced Mentors are something similar; they have demonstrated sound knowledge in fields such as Young Writers, English as Second Language, and other areas that require more than standard mentoring.
Below their avatar, you'll find their specialist topic. While you can contact them about these, they are also very willing to help with any site problems and can point you in the right direction if you're not sure who to contact.
Mentors: One of the first people to welcome you to the site (and include some helpful information) will invariably be a Mentor.
They are the friendly, welcoming face of WF and will never sing the theme song to Cops. On pain of meat . . . sorry, death. They are all too happy to guide you through the initial steps of what's required to make the change from new member to registered member, and keep you right as you seek to take your work and posts onto the main forum.
Any mentor can be approached for advice on how to navigate the site and get the best out of it, but mentors don't have super-duper mod powers and can only guide you with their extensive knowledge of the forum.
Now, who mentioned sliced bread? I'm hungry.
Content Managers: You may find them prowling the creative boards, Writing Discussions or Publishing, or digging through member blogs, posts in the Lounge and Procrastination Central. They are searching for news, tasty snippets of member talent, and/or gems of wit or wisdom for WiFs, podcasts or for the Media Managers to add to our Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, blog platforms and any other social media outlet they think will get your name and your work seen where it counts.

Seriously though, these members have no staff responsibilities whatsoever, and are free to come and go as they please. But because they were once senior staff, this user group was created in recognition of their valuable contributions. And because they really know how to deal with psychotic kittens.
Friends of WF: No, this isn't an elite group of our favorite people. Nor is it some cultish, high school clique. That's not to say that this particular user group doesn't consist of entirely awesome people, but you don't have to ritualistically slaughter anything in order to join. All you have to do is sign up.
There's a button on the right sidebar. You click it, you choose the length of your membership (anywhere from one month to one year) and then you pay the subscription fee. Boom—you're now a FoWF. This gives you access to a couple super-duper secret areas of the forum, including the chat room where you can hang out, shoot the breeze with fellow members, and occasionally learn a thing or two during a guest chat.
Also, instead of having a standard title (ink blot, scrivener, etc), you can choose your own custom title and you can change it as often as you like. You wanna be The Eggman? How about The Walrus? Well, goo goo g'joob, my friend.
Veterans: The expression “cream of the crop” comes to mind when I think about this user group. Some of them are former staff members, while others have turned down offers to join staff. They're just regular members who stand out, who contribute to the site when there's no obligation for them to do so.
Also, they stay out of trouble. Well, apart from that one time they filled the Admiral's shoes with peanut butter, but then again, I do believe some of the staff were in on that too. Either way, to become a Veteran, you have to be a member for at least a year (this is negotiable), and you have to be infraction-free for six months (this is not negotiable). That makes you eligible, but then you also have to be nominated by at least three different Veterans in order to be accepted.
Now, bear in mind, there isn't a specific criteria for getting a nomination. You just have to contribute something to the site—helpful critiques, lending a hand with the LM, being a friendly face, or any other "something." It's that X factor that makes the Veterans such a cool group of people. Oh, and if you earn too many infractions after becoming a veteran, the status can be taken away, so watch out for that.
Members: Dear, sweet, wonderful members, what would we do without you? Nothing. We wouldn't have a site at all without having such a diverse, all-around amazing group of members. You're the ones that keep this site alive.
I know we have all these special groups to showcase certain people, but everyone on this site is, first and foremost, a member. Even the Admiral. He might wear the pants around here (well, most of the time anyways!) but he's still a member just like everyone else. He logs in every day, checks his subscribed threads, likes a few posts, and writes a few replies.
That's what members do. They keep threads moving by adding their thoughts to the discussions. They create their own threads, whether it's writing posted for critique, a question about dialogue, or an off-topic discussion about mayonnaise. That's what a writing forum is all about, and it certainly couldn't exist without general membership.
New Members: These are sort of like pledges for sororities and fraternities, except that we don't make you run our errands, wash our cars, or generally humiliate yourself. We're pretty cool like that.
Due to a horrendous amount of spammers (that is, people and bots who register just to advertise their crap), we have to put a few restrictions on new accounts. You can't create any threads in the creative areas (the Workshop, Fiction, Poetry, etc), and you also can't update your avatar or your signature right away.
Sometimes your posts don't appear immediately, usually because of links and images that cause the post to be flagged as possible spam. Don't panic though--they'll appear after a moderator approves them. (The amount of spam we receive is unbelievable, so bear with us on this.)
However, the good news is, all you have to do in order to lift these limitations is make ten posts (but they have to be thoughtful posts, not “this is cool” or “Wow!”). Or, if you simply need to upload that angry cat picture and use it as your avatar right now, you can also pay the subscription fee and become a Friend of WF. Either way works.
So there you have it. From patrons to newbies, WF's elusive color chart has been revealed. Now, let me go find a new member--my car needs washing.
