Ayn Rand

The Fountainhead is probably the best book I've ever read. She went a little overboard with Atlas Shrugged, and it felt a little too similar to Fountainhead, but it was great too.

Fountainhead is one of those books that changed the way I think.

I'm going to try to get around reading her non-fic philosophy books soon here. Anyone read them? Worth the time?

Hey Malone,

Read Fountainhead back in the late 60s. Definitely left an impression, along with the Iron Butterfly--that's a not-so-inside joke pertaining to the thread over at In-da-gada-da-vida.

It's not non-fiction, but give Anthem a read. A really wild little novella, with the first part written in first person plural.

We The Living is also especially amazing, since it was written when she wasn't even thinking in English yet.

Though I didn't like Anthem as a story it has a lot of philosophy of the anti-socialist variety.

Just picked up Anthem based on you guys' recommendations. Couldn't find We the Living, which is the one I really wanted. Oh well. Thanks for the tip to check it out. Reading the back cover, it sounds like her normal plot of a man living outside of conformity and struggling for the woman he loves.

Keep looking for We the Living. It really is a good read. And it really brings post-revolutionary Russia alive.

I am still trying to track down The Fountainhead, but am a little into Atlas Shrugged. It's taking me awhile to read, but I have only ever been defeated one book -- The Hobbit. I'm enjoying Rand's style. It's different, [duh], and quite indepth. But I like indepth and heavy. I'm insane. *thinks maybe she should try the Hobbit again, but doesn't really like Tolkeins style*

I'm working through Atlas Shrugged myself. I'm well over half way. I've been reading it off and on, since it's a book where you have to digest things before continuing. I started it last summer, and I hope to finish it this summer (school got in the way, hehe).

The Fountainhead is my favorite book. I can read it (and have read it) over and over again. Her other books were good as well, but this one in paticular struck me soundly because I was in the transition of quitting the school of architecture and becoming a writer when I found it. The Ayn Rand Institute gives away a $10,000 scholarship each year to the winner of an essay based on Atlas Shrugged, I believe. I'm working up the courage to submit for this year, though it's going to take some work and analysis to do it. The Ayn Rand Institute: Atlas Shrugged Contest

It's being made into a movie starring Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller, title changed to "Atlas Sharted"

Oh great, does that mean my neck of the woods is going to be filled with film crews? Maybe they will just film it in California and call it Colorado. Another good book slaughtered by Hollywood.

I highly doubt that, Malone. Have you read the essays of past winners? They're not impressive intellectual feats and I doubt they'd be hard to top if you took your time.
