Both of Peter Farrelly's novels are great.
Some of you might recognize the name. He's one of the Farrelly brothers, responsible for the movies There's Something About Mary, Kingpin and Dumb And Dumber.
His first novel Outside Providence is fantastic. Great characters, well written humorous dialogue and situations, as well as some heavy themes, like friendship, family, love, etc. The story is basically a coming of age plot, but Farrelly's writing is unlike any other I've read.
The second novel The Comedy Writer is much the same in terms of character development and the use of humor. The story follows a guy who moves to Hollywood to be a screenwriter. (Yes, there's an autobiographical element to this novel.)
I think all writers would gain a lot from reading Farrelly's novels, if for no other reason than to learn about pacing. No one knows pacing better than those who write for the screen, and it translates wonderfully in these novels.
