Hundred Years of Solitude, no doubt about it. Some of his other work is quirky or tedious compared to this, his masterpiece.

It's sort of the the Latin Lit 101 book and sure to reward a wide variety of readers.

I kind of like the quirky little short stories. Especially the ones about alert decomposing bodies.

If you don't want to dive into Hundred Years yet, you can get your feet wet with A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings.

I just finished The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings. I really enjoyed it, gritty magical realism at its best.
