i really enjoy reading well-known authors like Rowling and Tolkien and they are good authors but they are not my favorites.
my favorite author is probably Markus Zusak. I love his writing style, i think its really unique. His book I Am the Messenger is probably my all time favorite, tying with a couple others. It is an excellent piece of literature, and it has the greatest, like literally, the most phenomenal ending to a novel i have every seen. check him out, he also wrote The Book Thief-- great book.

Markus Zusak for sure
he has a unique writing style that i really enjoy reading. He develops the plot very well.
His book I Am the Messenger is definitely my favorite book of all time, tying with a few others. it has the greatest, like literally, the most phenomenal ending i have ever seen.
i also enjoy the classic philosopher type writers like thoreau.

Thing is, there are also writers that I consider on the whole to be average, but who occasionally rise to incredible heights. For example, Norman Mailer's all over the board, but The Executioner's Song was a book that I found almost impossible to put down.

Okay, after reading everyone else's choices, I've a few to add:
William Faulkner
Kurt Vonnegut
John Steinbeck
I've not read all of Russo, but Empire Falls was an outstanding work.
I have read most, if not all, of John Irving and he's spotty. Garp and Owen Meany are both fantastic.
Wally Lamb, please write something for those of us out here who thought She's Come Undone and I Know This Much is True were spectacular!
Jose Saramago: I need to read Blindness; I really, really liked All the Names.
Harper Lee: One at-bat, one home run (To Kill a Mockingbird).

I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, so J.k Rowling is up there. But I also love horror,
so that makes Stephen King a big one as well. T. A. Barron is a very skilled writer as well, and I love Gary Schmidt's work. So, those four are my favorites.

 Stephenie Meyer is my number 1 but then love these authors too. Stuart Hill, Shannon Hale, Christaphor Paloni, Scott Westerfeld, and myself.

Anne Rice, by far. Her "Vampire Chronicles" feels like something Bruce Campbell would have written if he wrote vampire stories, and the Mayfair Chronicles is somehow even better. She even wrote a porn-version of Sleeping Beauty, for Christ's sake. That I can like.  Just shows her twisted, demented sense of humor.

David Eddings for crafting epic cliches in such away that they aren't cliches at all
Raymond Feist.. just coz
and Stephenie Meyer for her twilight series which I think is the most romantic vamp series ever.
