I read Tolkien's books first and perhaps because I was younger they did not make as much of an impression on me as The Iron Tower Trilogy.

Anyway, McKiernan's books are a sort of spin-off of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. For some reason I was much more immersed in McKiernan's work. Guess I like my tea with more sugar
