I read "The New York Trilogy" awhile back, and really enjoyed it. I hadn't read anything like it before. I can't quite put my finger on why I liked it so much... the world that Auster creates in the novel is very surreal and strange, and something about it really appealed to me. After reading these stories, I wasn't quite sure if I hadn't gotten the point, or if there was even a point to have gotten at all. To this day I still don't know if I missed something in the stories that would make me say, "Ah ha!" or if Auster was simply chronicling his characters' respective descents into madness.
I'm currently reading "Moon Palace" and am finding it to retain some of that quirky weirdness, but so far it also seems much more sentimental and optimistic than "New York Trilogy." Although I am only a little ways into the book so I don't know exactly what to expect.
I would have to say I really like what I've read of his so far. Anyone else here a fan?
