Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin

I'm a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire, so when I picked up this book I thought it wouldn't live up since Martin wrote it so early in his career. Besides, I thought, how great can a book about vampires and the Mississippi River be?

Boy, was I wrong. I think it may have been one of the best books I've read in a long, long time.

    Anyone else read this?

Fever Dream is the book Anne Rice wanted to write. Much better than Martin's sword and sorcery stuff, more in line with his excellent sf. But of course he didn't find large-scale success until he dumbed down the product a la Piers Anthony.

Honestly, it's my favorite stand alone novel. Period.
It started out slow but once it picked up the pace it totally redeemed itself.
This is the way it was meant to be.
