By Brian D'Amato. Little monkeys in LM Coffee reminded me of this book, which if you've read it makes sense and if you haven't I'm not going to tell you how it relates. If it's on your to read list and don't want to know anything then don't read on further. I don't reveal any big secrets but I hate to have this effect someones reading of the book.
My mother picked this up at Costco, I think it was recommended reading in their newsletter. That is generally how she picks her books. She couldn't finish the book. She said she couldn't get over the mc attitude. A shame, she didn't get to the good parts.
I almost dropped it too. It is really rare for me to not finish a book, it has to be pretty crappy.
I didn't mind his attitude. It fit the character well. I didn't like the foreign language parts that were not translated and you could not infer the meaning. I didn't like all the science. Being sf/fantasy I would expect the science but I would also figure that it would be explained or understandable. There is seriously two pages of just mathematical equations. It's like watching the professor on Numbers but it doesn't translate over well to the book and he at least explains it in laymen terms. It seemed like the author was just shoving the knowledge in to show how smart he was. It detracted from the story considerably and I was ready to quit.
The only reason I didn't was the first chapter offered a glimpse into the future and it was fascinating. He did a fantastic job of world building once you get to the Mayan times. It was complete and believable. I swear it's like two different people wrote the book. The sections where the mc is in the past are fascinating and engaging. The present time is like slogging through wet cement. You could cut out half of the book and it would be great. I was seriously disappointed. There was so much potential but it didn't live up to it at all.
