    What's your take?

I want your opinion of "Crooked Little Vein" by Warren Ellis -- the writing style more than anything else.

I keep reading books like "Fight Club" and "Choke" and "Crooked Little Vein"; I find the style pretty entertaining and, at the least, intriguing.

Here's an excerpt from CLV: Warren Ellis - A Piece Of CROOKED LITTLE VEIN

    Thanks for taking a look.
"If you're paddling down the road in a canoe with four flat bananas at 97 kph, then how many pancakes does it take to shingle a doghouse?" asked Professor Garrett. When the class hesitated to answer, he continued, "Well, the answer is blue, because ice cream has no bones."

Someone sent me that Ellis book but I never read it. I thought he was some comic book guy. That excerpt didn't really make me want to read more.

As far as Palahniuk, he's more about style and shock than story. Choke was pretty bad. The one about all the writers locked in a house was hit and miss. I usually enjoy the first quarter or so of his novels, then the enjoyment of the style alone wears off and I never think of the book again.

One of my ungrad writing profs (and advisor) was friends with Chuck and they both teach the same style of writing.

I actually agree 100% about the Chuck P. books. I find myself enticed with the style and idea of the book, but it never really seems to develop into something I care much about. If all the characters died off, I'd still feel dandy. And Ellis is "some comic book guy." I found "Crooked Little Vein" better, because it makes me laugh a lot. I also like the satire of censorship and government -- he's definitely far left, or anarchist, or something.
