It took place in the future. Sort of like the movie Ember. They were under ground, but stuck there. The child was taught to read by his grandmother, and therefore was able to find a way out. Each level he made it up, was nicer than the one before. Finally he and a girl he took with him, make it to this overgrown tunnel, and finally out to the above ground. I think the tunnel had a glass top? But was overgrown in plantlife.
I read the book when I was between 11 and 13, so it would have been published by 1980.
I believe it had a train or track maybe, and or a farmhouse with a field of yellow prairie on the cover. I could be wrong on the cover.
I would love to read this again. It was in a school library, and not super thick. A young adult novel I think.
