Step into the ocean...

My goal is to write more, become published, and one day write professionally. Journalism and short fiction are my target fields, though I have some rhyme and verse that I associate with my other hobby, acoustic guitar.

This blog serves the purpose of a 'writer's journal.' I will post about my steps to achieve this goal, my thoughts on the process, and how my writing is developing as I take on this challenge. I will post excerpts of my writing, hopefully many, as I hope to make real progress.

  1. Father Gonzo, Father Grunge, teach me your Walk...

This is not to say I look up to them for their addictions or their unfortunate suicides, but Hunter S. Thompson and Kurt Cobain are powerful influences in my life. The Father Of Gonzo and the Father Of Grunge--two men who entered the field of their interest, each carrying a powerful message, and, unwilling to change themselves, changed it completely and forever. But, yes, it is a bit about the 'rock-star lives' they led, though only one was a musician.

Currently, I am reading Dr. ...

  2. What I've learned from online writing forums...

Posting your work for others to see and comment on and critique is fun, but critiquing other people's work is the golden opportunity you have here. By honing your skills on other people's writing, you'll develop a better sense of what you should be doing to yours.

Take in-line critiques for example: critiques in which the critiquer's words are inserted directly into the writing. The critiquer's words are usually bright red or have a green background, anything to distinguish it from ...

  3. Unsatisfying updates on my 'writing quest'...

by , 05-17-2012 at 06:05 AM (Step into the ocean...)
Well, for starters: the writing sample I sent to Writer's Domain about 'Utah Lawn Care' was rejected. They gave no specific response to it, just an automated e-mail--all a crock of horse molasses. It's no State Of The Union address, but Writer's Domain is no presidential speech writing website. Search engine optimization isn't foreign policy, I figured I was capable of leading people to a website if I put their predicted Google key words into my article a couple times. Isn't that how it works? Crock ...

  4. Prisms reflecting prisons into infinity...

by , 05-17-2012 at 05:42 AM (Step into the ocean...)
Just some random writing, letting a few ideas go on paper. I started with the 'cages' metaphor and went from there--it ended up about anxiety, which I have medication for, so you know it's at least somewhat legit. I am more than interested in your comments, critiques, praise, insults, death threats, snide comments, etc. Feel free to burn me a new one, or correct a grammar mistake.

There are many layers of personal and social anxiety separating people from each other that most ...

  5. Two Ways Contest entry: Words Are Prizes...

by , 05-15-2012 at 06:02 AM (Step into the ocean...)
I confess, I am cheating on the Writing Forums. That is, I have another forum on the side called Scribophile. Don't worry, I'm not leaving this community, just broadening my network. They have themed contests and sometimes cash prizes are rewarded to 1st and 2nd place, sometimes 3rd. This has motivated me to enter one: the Two Ways Contest (I could win $50 for 1st place or $25 for 2nd.)

The guidelines to the contest are to write 2 pieces, a poem and some prose, with similar themes.
