I went to the store to buy some stuff today, for once keeping myself under a budget. I only went 3 dollars over.

I wasn't going to buy a bag. Actually, I went to buy a pair of running pants. I ended up buying more than that, of course. There's one thing in particular that I really loved - this cool, banana yellow cross body bag with zippers that zip in opposite directions. When I saw it, I thought, "This is totally me." I imagined myself wearing it around on the streets, a bright pop of color in grey, cloudy Washington. I pictured myself with it slung across my shoulder, an unexpected surprise over my black Islamic abaya when I go to Mecca and Iraq this fall.

It kinda reminded me of Holden Caulfield, from Catcher in the Rye. He had that red hunting hat, remember? It was like a symbolism of his distinctness, his individuality. Remember what he said when he put it on? "This is a people shooting hat. I shoot people in this." Haha, gotta love that kid.

Anyways, I ran into an old high school friend of mine at the store (gosh I feel old just saying that - an old high school friend of mine). She's Ukrainian. I asked her how she's been and she said fine and the first thing she asked me was, "Are you married yet?"

"What? No!" I freaked.

"Oh." She didn't really look surprised. "Most of my Asian and Ukrainian friends are married now."

"Really?" I said. "Huh. Most of my friends are married now too. I know this girl who is only 18 and got married last year. Now she's pregnant."

"Oh my gosh, that's horrible!" she exclaimed.

"I know, right?!" I said.

"It makes me feel so left behind!"

"Yeah. Wait, what?!"

I don't really remember what she said after that because she was in a hurry, and I was kinda shocked by it anyways. But at the same time, not really surprised, if that makes any sense. She said bye quickly and went to leave the store with her mom.

Putting all that aside, I really like my new yellow cross body bag. It's me. It's Fatima's bag. It's like my own red hunting hat. Everyone should have their own red hunting hat.
