  1. Writing and running not so different

About two miles into my run I noticed a new set of tracks in the snow. After running through one of the many parking lots spread out long the Catherine Valley trail I spied a new set of tracks from someone who had started their journey here.

As I run I pay attention to who walked where and at what pace. The snow reveals a history of who was here last, who may be ahead of you, who might you meet on the return trip. It is not hard to spot the footsteps of a fellow runner.

  2. Climbing the Mountain

Climbing Mt Everest by Bob Brown
I have no idea what makes a man attempt the impossible, only that I have seen the mountain and decided, I wanna to try I wanna to do more than just wonder, what if. My mountain, a 50 mile foot race through the hills and woods of Schuyler County.
Im not a runner, not an athlete, but someone who thrives on pushing themselves to see what they're made of. Being a foolish

It was a long way from the hills of Schuyler County to the muddy fields of Barre, Mass. The journey to get here involved lots of hard work and sacrifice. I was surrounded by men and women who had also put in long hours of training in an effort to prepare for this day. The sense of camaraderie through

  5. Adult kids and Appreciating them

The last week has been busy, and very rewarding. I have been training for a Spartan Race, ten miles through the woods and 30 or so obstacles. My kids both compete in them and for Father's day as a gift they signed me up.

Last Sunday I ran 7 miles with Russ on woods trails, he is my size but ten pounds lighter, I had him carry ten pounds in a back ...

  6. The Challange

The first installment of my eight week journey. I figured to share ... maybe you'll share the pain or be inspired, hopefully not be bored.

    The Challenge

My daughter handed me a slip of paper, a wry smile crossed her face as she placed it in my hand. Unfolding it revealed my mission for the next 8 weeks, I had no choice but to accept. In the corner, it was stamped with a Spartan helmet, the note thanked me for my entry into the Spartan

  7. Words, unsaid by Bob Brown

I can hear the anguish in his voice, worn down, worn out and fed up, like a caged animal who has been beaten, he looks for any escape possible.

It started out just like so many other conversations with so many other men, Can we talk? Its a phrase that even puts a knot in my stomach. On the other end someone is throwing me a lifeline, one I feel unqualified to catch yet seem to do so with surprising regularity.

To each person who has thrown the life line there are

I scrambled to find my helmet and jacket. The fire alarm had now sounded for the second time. The Army surplus air raid siren echoed across the hills breaking the tranquility of our small town. Switching on the scanner we found out it was our warehouse that was on fire.

I jumped on my motorcycle to ride over to see what was left. I parked by the main garage in the puddles of water a remnant from the firefight. I was

  9. Things my father should have told me. Doing business on a hand shake

I have been in business for 38 years now, not always the same business but always with the same goal, make money.

I have over the years made deals with both a contract and without, the majority without. As any businessman I have incurred my fair share of loses over the years, many thousands of dollars. This is not uncommon in business and it would be nave for anyone to think they would some how be exempt.

Today I rely on a handshake for the majority of my business, ...

  10. Things I wish my father had told me... Business blog

I start out my week just as most business people do, on Sunday night. Going over quotes and contacting customers who need more information. I do this on Sunday night so that any information needed, will be there for Monday morning.

I had a chance to reflect today on what is the normal chaos for a Monday. I thought for this blog I would just share some of what the day brought and what was involved in running a business.

The theme for today was " What capacity ...

  11. Things I wish my father had told me

Being a grandfather now lets me put a different perspective on life than I had when I was a young man. I can look back at all the mistakes I have made. Why did I not see more? Why did I not hear more? Why did I have to learn that the hard way?

Am I qualified to give advice? On some levels yes. I have been in 11 businesses since I was 17, I am currently own two. I have made a million dollars and lost a million dollars, through my business choices. What I hope pass on is some of ...
