  1. Conceptualization Part 2

So...I tried to picture myself in an interview but didn't have any real questions to ask myself. Moving on, I just watched three interviews with great writers on YouTube (why does Pat Rothfuss always look so tired???) and wrote down all the questions. (aside from the questions the interviews, themselves, were pretty entertaining and helpful)

I then answered them one by one and...I got a lot out of it. Explaining your story to yourself in a coherent form really improves your knowledge ...

  2. A Little Jaded

Just realized, again, that I will never live long enough to discover everything...never long enough to meet everyone or hear their stories (I love peoples stories- whether real or made up), never live long enough to see all the places in the world.

It sucks that there's sooooo much to the world- even to the tiny part of it that you live in, and it might as well be on Jupiter's moon. Sucks to think that when the lights go out...there's so much left undone and you know what really ...

  3. Saturday thinking

It's Saturday and the sun is shining, well at least for now it is. Yet here I sit glued to my laptop screen thinking maybe just maybe I've got it right now. The troubles of re-editing your own novel it is a battle in it's own way I have found. It can be fun but tedious at times when you re-write the same sentence over and over until you are finally happy with it. Now do not get me wrong i love my novel and the wa it is shaping up however I wish I could make the process go faster sometimes or know ...

  4. Whitewashing?

Whitewashing is one of those things that exists but is so ambiguous that it's hard to pin someone down with it with absolute certainty...

For instance, the latest movie "The Wall" with Matt Damon had gotten some charges of whitewashing from the public. When people noticed Storm getting progressively less Black in the comics, they called whitewashing. "Dr Strange" also got some heat over it's choice of Tilda Swinton (whose role in Constantine, the movie, I looooooooooooooooved...). ...

  5. The Relationship of the Professor and Businessman

It's a placeholder title. Couldn't come up with anything swift for right now.

There's a lot to glean from "The Rommel Papers". If you're unfamiliar, please feel free to check out my review of it here first. (hyperlink would be added in final draft)

Approaching the book from just a historical or military angle is to miss the insights on life and human nature. What I want to grapple with in this blog is a specific contrast that Rommel makes between professors of ...

  6. Crypto-Fictions

It just occurred to me that this is actually a thing, though it might not have been directly named or defined as such by any "official" sources...

I thought about this when looking at the major differences between Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire. The two series obviously have different styles, but the thing that stuck out was that while each one was detailed and had deep recesses of unknown information, A Song of Ice and Fire is constructed as a mystery rather ...

  7. Conception

You know how there's that fiction of going outside of time and space and being able to see it all like a three-dimensional object and, from this, gaining a god-like understanding of it and an ability to shape it...?

Well, very briefly, I came up with a new method for solidifying my conception. Imagine that you finished it. Imagine you finished this undertaking and you are on television at an interview and people are asking you various questions about your story and your creative process. ...

  8. Nature...

I'm a fan of the Elder Scroll series because it's one of the first worlds I was able to visually experience. As the player you are able to walk from region to region and as a city-boy, it's my first sense of what it's like to travel "over the mountains and through the woods". In stories, travel is often very purposeful and somewhat hurried. They are usually going from one place to another and never really dally about...

So, I got on the bus today at around 5:50 am and the lights were off...and it felt sooooo comfortable.

It reminded me how uncomfortable unnatural light feels and how I'd always prefer the natural light. Is this not true for other people- that you feel more comfortable with the lights off.

I remember when I was a kid and I used to be sitting in what some would call a dark room, but it wasn't night time, it was just a room without that much sunlight. My mom or pap would ...

  10. Denial of assistance

I wish I could be angry about it all anymore. I just feel saddened. Finally after four weeks I finally get a response from the state regarding my Unemployment and I'm rejected. I wasn't counting on it but it would've been a nice cushion to keep me going.

So, as it stands it just means I have to take whatever comes my way soon. That doesn't thrill me in the slightest. I'm not angry, just saddened. Of course the reason is that I was 'warned' and 'should have known this jeopardized my ...

  11. Morlocks and Eloi

That scene in the 1996 movie "Ransom" haunts me. The bad-cop, played by Gary Sinese explains how society has broken down along the lines of H.G. Wells future in "The Time Machine". According to Sinese's character, we're all either Morlocks or Eloi now.
For those of you unfamiliar with the literary reference, we're either Wolves or Sheep. I've struggled with this.

The fact is, I don't want to believe it. But reality is an ugly mistress. Everywhere I look, ...

    HOW DID MY DAY GO?
    AHHH!

    Okay, picture this;

When I clock on for my final shift of the week, 22-00 til 06-00, as I pack a lunch on a Friday afternoon making ready even, as much as one can make ready, I'm done, mind knows it, body knows it, and if there is such a thing as soul, that knows it to but what the hell, it's gotta be done.

  13. Light Table

I had a square glass pane from an old livingroom table, so I set it in the middle of two other tables of equal height then put a lamp underneath. Presto!!! I got a light table.

It's really good for making copies of my maps, but the best thing about it was that I didn't have to make copies, per se, but I could make simpler overlays (at least thats what I call them...). It's just having your bare map over a light table and then using another sheet of canvas on top of that so you can ...

  14. New Drawings, new style

I've been working on developing a new drawing style that I like better than my last style. These drawings are what I've done to try to develop it. Trying to get into more "american comic book style" than the manga style I originally learned.

  15. Adderall

Cut a pill in half yesterday afternoon and tried it for the first time.

Wrote 1000 words in a period of about four hours. Not bad. And I found myself more focused on aspects of the story, the characters; my mind didn't drift as often, and when it did it wasn't as long as it'd typically be.

What surprised me the most was how normal I felt. Truthfully it felt like... how I feel on a rare "good" day (without the help of drugs), when the stars align and by some miraculous ...

  16. The Infinite Path

Some say there is no end to our desires...

We all walk a particular road in a particular way through life. We all have hardships. Obstructions. Deviations. Distractions.

Some of us walk by day, others by night. Some walk in fair weather, and others through storms.

No one has ever figured out exactly why we walk, and no one has figured out for certain where we end up.

Things constantly change. No place is ever the same. The people we start with ...

  17. God's Son

This one is fairly cliche and it's one of my greatest pet peeves and that is the idea of the "God's Son".

"God's Son" is a term I came up with to describe a character that becomes the center of the universe. All roads lead to the character and only through that character can things be achieved. In video games, this is often the case. Someone's son fell down the well and a year later the parents are still waiting on YOU to go and get him. Only YOU can retrieve the ...

  18. The Hero's Ascent

    Good Morning

I suppose I can characterize the heroes journey from beginning to the fulfillment of character and ability- or peak potential (not necessarily the end of the story) as the Short Ascent and the Long Ascent.

Seeing as though most stories revolve around conflict, the Short Ascent would be typical in a short story. For my story, it is the Long Ascent that I focus on and in relation to that I wondered about the pacing and pathing of such a long tale and what ...

    That's right!

As a reward for donating $200 to his Patreon, I got to talk to the man himself today.

We spoke for about 45 minutes about all sorts of things, but there was one thing he asked me that really "clicked".

"Are you proud of anything you've written?"

And when I thought about that I said "Yes".

It felt like he'd asked me something that I ...

  20. Today I Messed Up (swearing)

Today I've fucked up the best thing that I've got. I dont know how or if I can fix this.

I guess I started noticing my depression earlier this year. Kinda at the end of last semester. Im pretty sure I've had it for most of my life but I've been able to keep a fairly good handle on it up until then. It just seems to be getting worse now. To the point where I just dont know if I'll be around tomorrow.

Its gotten to the point where I cant hide it from my boyfriend. ...

But, I don't know. I wasn't ready to take charge of the situation; I'm a coward. Plus last time we saw one another - just a month ago - you told me you had a boyfriend.

    Didn't seem proper either way.

Meh... more than likely isn't even a big deal. Best not think about it. Just ride out the buzz. Forget it. Forget you.

  22. One More Titan...

In my story, I didn't want the story to have a uniform or particular set of themes as it's backdrop, such that a person could say it was something like a comedy-adventure or whatever... I was going for a story that could shift through themes as fluidly as the life of a person...or a nation.

Of all of them, however, there is one I've yet to master completely but have been working on. It is horror. Not just horror...deep, psychologically rooted horror. Not just a surface scare, an existential ...

  23. Amateur Thought #1: (My) Spirituality

The main reason I avoid religion is because I feel that what is taught is largely subjective and selective. For instance, in Christianity, hardly anyone is Christ-like. Christ was a selfless promoter of love, understanding, compassion, service, and sacrifice to the point of his own death. Christians, on the other hand, are supporters of war, politics, and thoroughly immersed in human vice. They forgive themselves their own transgressions. They laugh at the teachings of Christ as readily as they ...

  24. Beauty as Illusion

I realize that this is one of those big ideas that 18 year olds think about and I probably have no business wasting peoples time writing about it- but as I am currently working in a job that leaves me with ample time to read and I guess think, so I started to think about this idea anyway. As I was driving to a class I am mandated to take by the state, I thought about the concept of beauty. We know that beauty is a fleeting thing; in faces, changes in the seasons, fashion, time wearing down the ...

  25. Sci Fi Idea: Fixing Time

    Everything is wrong...It's always wrong.

A such, the concept of time travel is terrifying because there will always be something wrong...always something to try and change...always a reason to go back and meddle...

And then there's all the well-known contradictions of time travel.

For the most part, we tend to turn a blind eye to these contradictions for the sake of enjoying the rest of the story. I hate contradictions and inconsistencies, so I wondered what ...
